Has anyone ever tried turbo charging a 91 subaru legacy L? Have the EJ22 with FWD non-turbo currently. Looking for about 50 HP. Any suggestions. (not interested in nitros)

You could do it, you'd need the headers, uppipe, downpipe, turbo crossmember ect. There is a thread on it somewhere.

a ej25 would get you about a 30 hp gain. and would cost alot less than a turbo. plus be alot more reliable than a turbo's NA. better torque curve too. i almost wish i had a EJ25 iw/a 4.11 final in my SS sometimes. almost.

much more than that in a FWD open diff car would be a waste i think.
get a good front LSD and upgrade spring/struts/swaybars and then you would probably want to go as high as 250 CHP.
it seems that the EJ22 can handle about 7-10 PSI w/out TOO many problems.
but you will more than likely need to upgrade the fuel system somehow. from the pump to the inectors. if you were to turbo your NA EJ22.

but where would the fun in that be?
in all seriousness the na ej22 is plenty of motor for a FWD legacy. the big problem, at least on loose surfaces, is limited traction of the open diff. i probably lost 1-2 seconds a rally cross run on lost traction at coner exits. those tenths here and there start to add up.
yeah and then i realise how much fun a EJ22T would be w/4.11s and then my mind really gets racing and then i start eyeeing forester XTs for their 4.44s and get all giddy like a school girl.
what gas pig this thing would be w/12 pounds of boost and 4.44s. but man would i have fun.
in all seriousness if all he wants is 180chp then i say a ej25 w/cams and exhaust would be a much better use of time and money than turbocharging a na ej22. or he could try the fraknemotor that monson has built and i had been talking about doing before i got my SS.
now if he wanted to get over 200chp at some point in the future he should start looking for some turbo parts and get building. and then let us know when it blows up. if it does at all.

Or supercharge! I got about 35-40 hp on my first setup without having to upgrade the fuel setup. And that was alot easier than the turbo modifications you have to do.

The biggest problem that I'm having is finding parts. Is there any turbo kits or supercharger kits for this aplication?
I only want 50 hp because I life in NY. To much more Hp gets you in trouble really quick on icy roads (even with the best sneakers). Also this is my current primary driver, I want it to be reliable.
Thanks guys!

One last thing...has anyone ever done the swap to an EJ25 in the 91 legacy FWD? I'm just wondering what the fit is like. Is there a huge amount of modifications needed to make the engine fit...i.e. engine mounts, tranny, headers...ect?

Look for Jason Grahn's thread where he describes the swap of an EJ25 into his Legacy. I don't think it was FWD, but that doesn't matter.

Plus, all EJ engines and trannys mate up. No tranny swap involved, unless you want to convert your current setup, or go AWD.
