I've still been dealing with grinding occasionally between 1st & 2nd, as well as an overall stiff very notchy shifter.

I was down at a buddy's last weekend doing some brake testing. When he drove my car, he even mentioned it, and said it felt like he was abusing my transmission because you had to force it into gear. That was the final kicker. I had been thinking of going back to stock, but that clinched it.

I've got the stock wrx shifter lever back on, and it's definitely a lot smoother. I will need to drive on it for a little bit to get a good accurate feel, but I've just come to the conclusion my transmission does not like short shifters.

That's weird, as of a day or two ago, my sti short throw shifter has become extremely stiff and its hard to find the gears. I noticed the spring that goes on the linkage and holds the shifter in neutral under third and above fourth is hanging free but i kinda doubt that thats it. I put the rubber mount on the end of the linkage but im not sure its the right one because the shifter either sits too high or too low depending on which way i bolt the mount up.

What rubber mount are you talking about? The one at the end that bolts to the car chassis?

That's the neutral return spring, so that probably IS it, and your hitting the gate when you push it into gear.

Yeh, the rubber one on the end that bolts to the chasis. I posted that from work this morning, when i was driving home it got really hard and then it came free and every gear but third is normal now. I'll have to fix that spring but i think something else was happening.
