My fuel pump is melting it's wires

So I'm still having trouble getting my ej20 to acutally work, i've had it running, I then put it in gear, on jack stands, and now it won't run, it coughs but nothing, and it seems to backfire, as in the starter will turn it over and then it will cough but their is a loud bang, like the starter is being asked to go ther other direction.
So I'm checking all the forums trying to find out what problems I could find,
So I work my way back to the Fuel pump to find the negative wire going from the harness to the pump has melted off  and is hanging on by a thread, the wire is totally corroded, Hmm not good. So I replace the wire. What the hell would cause this, bad pump? could this explain my crappy engine starting problems?
Thanks
Frazer

Try replacing that wire with a new one that is the same size and very well grounded. Check all your other grounds out too.
