Okay, this will be confusing, but bear with me.

Here's what I have sitting in my garage
ADM AWIC
Perrin Divorced Wastegate Downpipe
STi takeoff bov(have no idea if this is even worth installing)

So I'll be installing the intercooler relatively soon, and when I do that, i plan to install the downpipe as well(I already have a wrx midpipe and STi axleback installed). So here's the plan. I want to replace the turbo while I'm in there, as well as hook up a mbc, and wire up a fcd.

Here's what I want:
not lots of lag
ability to sustain more boost if I feel inclined
a new turbo so my stock one doesn't self destruct

here's what I don't want:
lots of lag
a huge turbo
an expensive turbo
a stock ej22 turbo

I'm hoping to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $100, but realistically will probably need to spend more.

What do you think?

The STi blowoff valve (assuming you're talking about a new age STi) won't fit anywhere with the AWIC. If you have the stock AWIC inlet pipe, your stock blowoff valve will plumb easily in, though if there's no turbo heat shield it will eventually cook to a brittle crunchiness.

A hundred dollars could get you a stock WRX TD04. Adding an elbow to the compressor inlet shouldn't be too hard -- I think you could probably weld/epoxy studs on so that you can use the stock VF11's inlet elbow. A TD04 would not have lots of lag, could sustain a little more boost, be fairly new, not be a huge turbo, not be an expensive turbo, and not be a stock EJ22 turbo.

If you do ANY long sitting in traffic, the AWIC needs a resevoir. This is assuming you already have the pump and radiator for it. I heat the water in mine up pretty good on 50 degree drag nights and even though I have the radiator cooler for it and water constantly pumping, it doesnt cool down and I can definately feel the difference.

TD05 will be you friend.. lag ? what's lag ?

id say tdo4 too but take it from me. install is a bitch unless you want to cut the inlet. then its not so bad.

well you can get it with the proper elbo but youd have to find one used and it would cost about 300 or you could get one form 600+ from deadbolt.

You can get the TD05 with the correct elbow. In fact, if it's missing the elbow it's most likely because it was modified to remove the elbow.

You would have to add the elbow to the TD04. It wouldn't be a big deal; it's fairly easy to remove the compressor housing from the turbo in order to modify it. You'd cut off the short protrusion from the center and then figure out how to mount the elbow to it.

Either might be, but it'd be more fun and educational to just make one yourself for half the price.

If you do buy one, though, take it apart and make sure there's a good seat for the ball (you can use a hammer and a drift to force the ball bearing to deform the brass), and make sure there's a small bleed orifice on the outlet.

I think Rallitek still has a TD04 for $100...and if I am not mistaken, it's either new or very lightly used.

Unless you have very steady hands for perfectly straight drillin', or a drill press with vice, and an incredibly small set of drill bits, I'd recommend just purchasing a Dawes Devices MBC. Making a ball-and-spring MBC is conceptually simple; in practice, however, imperfections will result in undesirable boost control variations.

But, for $25, you can get Dawes Devices to make you one. And you know it's good.

Those eBay MBCs look like two of the incarnations of the one I tried to build with pieces from Ace Hardware. I wouldn't trust either of them.

I don't think a TDO4 WRX turbo is worth the time or effort of an install. The compressor maps for it are almost identical to the VF10, and any real gains made are probably from newer bearing design. Find a VF24/28/29. They spool really early, and can make plenty of flow to feed our 2.2l of displacement.
