Well after 2 years of sitting I'm finnaly putting my Legacy back together. What I need to know is what Turbo is better. I can get a good deal on a 03 WRX turbo but would this be an upgrade from stock? It looks smaller? I have a FMIC I will be using and I have an HKS EBC.

I had been running 11psi (I think?) when I had the stock set up. At what point does the boost cut come in and how do I get rid of it?

Also I got a WRX fuel pump, is this any better than the stock one?

Plus I got some supposidly better injectors, they are suppost to be from some JDM WRX, they are grey in color and will work in the stock intake, any ideas?

Basicly I'm just looking to get an idea of how much power I can shoot for with what I can get "afford" and what I already have. I'm not looking for huge power just a little more.

I think it would be a slight upgrade. It will have to be modified to fit.

Fuel cut comes in at 13psi

I think the Legacy one might even flow more if not the same.

The TD04L-13G is a slight upgrade over the VF11. You can run 14-15 psi more effeciently then the VF11 can but you still can't run big boost with it.

The TD04 will require some custom fitting but if you're going with a FMIC you're going to have to do a full custom intake plumb job anyways, so go for it.

For the FC, it's about 13 psi at sea level.

To combat it, build the vrg3 FCD. Do a search and you'll find the DIY directions. Shouldn't cost more then $10.

Not sure on the FP but I think they're about the same. I'd get the GSS341 Walbro 255. You can get them on ebay for $99 shipped w/install kit.

Good luck!

Sweet, sounds like what I want to do. I was just gonna build a custom UP and DP to turn the turbo so I could go strait in from the side. I'm assuming the extra .2L will spool the TD04 up a little faster than in the WRX?

Thaks for the info guys, I needed to know soon to decide if I wanted to pick up the TD04 tommorrow.

You should see me around more often now that I'm getting her back on the road.

I'm excited, I miss the turbo sounds :D

I don't think a td04 is worth all that work.

Yeah... isn't the 93-96 WRX turbo (TD05-16g) the one to go for if you're doing all that work?

If he can get the TD04 really cheap and does the work to get it in, it allows him to change to bigger IHI turbos on down the road like the VF22, VF23, VF28, VF29, VF30, VF34 ect...

So even though that is a lot of work for a turbo that isn't much of an upgrade over stock, I think it IS worth the trouble because of the fact that it will allow him to just "drop in" so many different turbos that are major upgrades, and are much more abundent then the 16G.

The 16G would be an excellent choice though (I'm obviously a fan).

Yeah, what he said :)

How much do I have to change really? Do they use different flanges? Shound I grab the up pipe and down pipe?

Differnt oil and water feed lines?

Obviously I need to mod all of that anyway to move the turbo around. I got no problem with that, and it's good to know that I can easily upgrade later if I want. 8)

It's a lot of work to modify the car enough to hold a straight-inlet turbo like the TD04 or the VF-series ones. There's not enough clearance between the turbo and the intake manifold. The most likely solution is a custom uppipe and downpipe.

In my opinion it would be easiest to modify the compressor housing of the turbo to make it a 90-degree inlet. You could cut off some of the inlet and then figure out a way to mount the elbow off the stock turbo onto it. But this would have to be done for each turbo.

azn2nr and magicmike actually did it without modifying the inlet, but they used this cobra-head-shaped inlet pipe that looks really restrictive to me.

With all these upgrade turbos you need to deal with a compressor outlet that's pointing in a different direction from stock. You could try reclocking but then you have a bunch of other things to deal with.

Yeah, I plan to modify the UP and DP, bending and welding pipe is no problem for me.

I just picked up the TD04 and a bunch of other stuff I misplaced or used in the two years I've had this thing apart :? I still need to score a rear diff but I think I have a line on that.

The last thing I'll be looking for is wheels and tires, I love the EURO WRX 17" but I would probly have to pay real money for those. I'll probly end up on some WRX 16"s and some Falkens. 8)
