I have a 1991 Legacy turbo 5mt. Today i was driving and hearing some grinding noises. Stopped at a light and then tried to move again and i think i tore the tranny apart. Engine stalled out and lots of clunking.... Not good.
Now onto my question im looking for a used tranny, can i use any 5 speed manual transmission from 1990 - 1994 on a legacy, or is the turbo tranny different?
Also if anyone has any ideas of where to start looking for a used tranny let me know....
Thanks.

The turbo tranny is different because it uses a hydraulic clutch instead of a cable like the NA's.
I, however, think it's strange that your tranny just came apart like that, with no warning. Are you sure maybe your shifter linkage hasn't come apart or your clutch has bit the dust?

Clutch wouldn't make a lot of noise when it goes out.
My tranny is going out the door (I think I blew my front diff), and I'm just gonna swap a WRX transmission into it, with my center diff for now.
Strange noises.

This whole problem started about a week ago. I noticed a slight ticking noise when i was idleing in neutral. However when i pushed the clutch in the noise went away. Upon take off in 1st it slowly got louder and louder. Yesterday the noise moved into 2nd gear as well as third, the same grinding noise. By around 6 pm it was getting bad the car was studdering upon take off getting loud. I stopped at a light in the left turn lane. Tried to get going again and the tranny ground and was loud then i heard a snap and some more grinding then the car stalled. I could start the engine but when i released the clutch the car wouldnt move and the engine stalled. When i had the car in the air yesterday the noise was definally comin from the tranny i could put my hand on the tranny ans feel that something inside wasnt right. i checked the fluid it was clean no haze or shavings. (from the dip stick)
I dont know whats wrong with it.
So you were saying that the turbo tranny is different, meaning i have to find another turbo tranny?
I got on the internet last night and tried to find a transmission for my car. turned up nothing.
Im at a loss right now on what to do.

Check car-part.com, but turbo Legacy transmissions aren't that cheap. Sounds like possibly you had a bearing seize or maybe chewed off some teeth which then worked their way through the transmission.
You can also try going to the regular transmission with the cable set up - they're supposedly not that much weaker.

I know a clutch doesn't make noise when it goes out, but clutches that have gone out many times won't release which makes shifting gears and the like rather difficult to do without grinding
But your more detailed description does seem to suggest a busted tranny.
Josh, chime in here and tell where you got your turbo tranny from.
