my cd player has finally crapped out. it wont even accept a disc now.

i like the look of the stock radio and cd player as separate units.

will the newer add on cd player for the impreza work?

or do i have to replace the whole thing w/something else? if i do i want to find a regular single din console so i can have the little compartment under the radio.

I took the factory subaru CD player out of the 01 rs and it plugged in and worked with the SS's original tape deck.

In fact I sold it to somebody on here to do just that with it.

so you still have the audio controls on the cassete/radio headunit?

and when you stick a disc in it automatically switches to CD?

does it actually plug in or do i need to get the soldering gun out?

cool. time to start looking for a subaru cd player.

I plugged the cd player into the deck. The plugs fit perfectly. And yes, when I put a cd in, it automatically started playing it.

But I have no idea if you have to pull the cd out to go back to using the tape or radio. ( as I was just testing to make sure they would work together.)

you can make a 2004 6disk cd player work quite nicely and they fit too. All you need is the wiring schematic for both cars from Ravenblade.com
took me about 15min to install.

On the SVX units the re is a play/stop button. The CD plays automaticly when inserted, and if you hit this, it stops (and you can use the radio/tape). Hit it again and you are playing the CD again. If yours has a button marked like that, then that function works for you too. Other units may have a stop/eject button. (press once to stop the CD, and again to eject it)

whats wrong with an aftermarket hu and a 1.5 din pocket with a lid on the front of it?

Some people don't like the look.

Personally, I have a subdued aftermarket HU with 1.5 DIN pocket.

I got the Pioneer 6500, as its backlights are green (to match the dash), and the faceplate is more of a gunmetal than silver, so it doesn't stick out so much.

thats an option but i dont really care for the look. would rather keep it oem and not replace the whole center dash w/a intall kit.

however that may be the most cost effective route.
