ok i have a 90 legacy 2.2. N\A FWD. i found a ej25 block but it is a DOHC will my heads still fit on this block so i can do my conversion with a 2.5 block and 2.2 heads? or do i need a 2.5 from a SOHC ?
Thanks

forgot to ask if the stock tranny will bolt back on fine with the new block?
Thanks again

EJ engines and trannies are like legos: they all go together just fine.
Your 2.2 heads are SOHC, so I don't know what you'd have to do to use them on a DOHC... ?

I have built a couple of these Ej25's w/ EJ22E heads. Just use the shortblock as if it were a stock replacement. CR will be around 10.7:1. That coupled with the displacement increase will provide a healthy power bump to 160-170hp or so. Just be sure to get phase I EJ25 head gaskets as the pistons clear the deck...

If you have the time and $$$, you can get your cams reground by Delta for another 12-15hp. Costs $130+ freight and they offer a 1 day turn around on your cores...

Good call, Matt.

Matt (or anyone who know's) I was wondering how you set the timing on the new motor? does this mod make it a close tolerance engine? can i use my old crank pully? thanks

i think it will make it an interference motor.

yes you can use the pulley. all the EJ ones are the same. you should consider a lightwieght pulley, like the perrin one.

and i will let someone else field the timing ? but i think it will be fine as long as you simply line the belt up w/the timing marks. there are three on the belt. one in the middle for the crank and one on either side to line up w/marks on the cam sprockets.

Timing doesn't change at all. Everything is the same on the two blocks except for the bore and stroke. EVERYTHING from your EJ22E bolts on.

If you crank the engine over without the timing belt attached, there is no-interference. If you were to mis-align the timing belt on assembly, you could have the valves hit the pistons. But you just use a new EJ22E timing belt and line up the lines, and voila...

And the E is what is known as designation of fuel delivery. It stands for a SOHC MPFI non-turbo charged engine...

Are you sure the EJ22e belt will fit? I thought the 2.5L block was a bit wider. . .

I reiterate, we have built a couple of these engines...

Not to harp on anyone or anything like that at all but I noticed several of the people posting in this thread are relative newbies - Matt Monson is a true subaru engine guru and knows just about everything about them. If he says something will fit, it will :).

Funny how things change. I remember when I first popped my head in here. I was treated like such a newb even though I have a 3 digit NASIOC member number and had been tuning these cars since 2000. I am very careful not to do the same to others. You never know who you are really dealing with with a screenname and post count. Hell, Xephyr still is a Scooby Newbie on NASIOC because he doesn't post much, even though his member number is about 100 lower than mine. I just try and treat everyone as equal until they show me that they are a dumbass...

Mods, feel free to delete this if you wish...

well said matt and thanks everyone for your input i will hopefully smoke some ppl in the oval races when this motor is done  come in 2nd place last friday with my 2.2l not moded much except i have a resistor on my knock sensor, my cat is cleaned out, and i put in some racing fuel. i found some new head gaskets for $30 each does this sound like a good price? or is there a certain brand i should get. thanks

one more question any tricks to taking this engine out of the car? or does someone have some pics. any funny stuff when trying to seperate the tranny and engine?

Word. We're all Scoobaru owners at the very least, and most of us are enthusiasts too. That should be enough.

Personally, I enjoy looking through the posts and catching the new members asking a question that I can help them with, before the experts jump in :)

I also get a chance to check what I've learned with the knowledge and experience of others. If I get corrected on something that I posted, then it's probably a good thing that I showed my ignorance and learned from it. Better to find out in a bulletin board post than in the garage when I screw something serious up...

Gardner - you didn't put leaded race gas in your Legacy, did you...? That stuff is hell on O2 sensors and cats (and cats, I'll wager!).

Might I inquire as to the purpose of the resistor on your knock sensor? Are you trying to decrease the chances of your ECU detecting knock for any particular reason...?

i don't have the cat in the car anymore its all knocked out and i tried 2 gallons of race gas in the tank and it was about 3/4 full. (it did make a difference though). a fellow subaru guru told me about that trick, unplug the knock sensor at the plug in (its about 6 inches from the knock sensor) connect the side that goes to the computer to a resistor ( i think it was 8000 ohms) and ground the other end of the resistor. Supose to advance the timing. But know i'm wondering if i mix in more race gas like 50/50 race gas/high test would the computer test to see where it would knock and with the higher test gasoline would it advance the timing on its own? not too sure. but for sure i know that my lap time went from a 18.68 to a 18.37 last week after that mod and race gas sooooo i'm guessing it worked.
As for the O2 sensor it didn't seem to make much of a difference when i unplugged it for a night when i tried to race with just about 1 foot headers on the car. sounded awesome but a little too loud so i knocked out the cat and put back some exhaust back on the race car just enough to get it out the side. (put the O2 sensor back on now)
Hopefully i can do the ej25 block mod and just use high test gasoline then because i doubt with that mod that i will need anymore power.

we really need some pics of this car in action!

we will build one of these motors this fall probably for our rallyx car.

Some of us never never never go to nasioc.

I think you butt dyno is broken. These cars can't advance timing enough to take advantage of race fuel. I think you were probably just high from the fumes of the unburned race gas and think you are going faster. ;)

is there a difference between the SOHC and DOHC 2.5l blocks?
