A/C is not cold anymore... :(

My 1992 Legacy L Wagon AWD had a great cooling A/C when I bought it 1 1/2 years ago but lately it is not cold anymore.
It doesn’t seem or sound like there is anything wrong so I was wondering if a coolant refill would do the job.
I’ve been eyeing those cans at the local Pep Boys – any suggestions/recommendations as far as brand, procedures, etc.?
I know nothing about A/C so what is the fuss about R-12, R-134a, retrofitting...?
Any help will be highly appreciated.

I've learned some stuff by watching this:

Now, let's see: are these the ports (green is low-port, red is high)...?

Green is high pressure side, Red is low pressure side.

Read over this regarding converting to 134a.

Only thing different I'd suggest is using PAG oil instead of esther oil. You'll need to clean the system out well though.

R12 I think can still be bought, but it's rather expensive.
