Has anyone out there sucessfully switched out the exhaust in a 98 Legacy Outback Wagon with good results? Looking to get more of that juicy boxer engine growl.. Any companies out there that make SS systems without too much trouble with install?

Any info would be definately appreciated

Two words, my friend:

Custom. Exhaust.

What size is your engine --2.2 or 2.5? You can go custom all the way back, even starting with headers, depending on how much dough you'd like to shell out for this project. Most of us are running (well, NAs anyway) 2.25", but no bigger than 2.5" Turbos can run 3", and it's better for them, but it doesn't provide enough backpressure for us NA guys..

There are "boxed" custom systems setup for your car, like Stromung, Mines, TWE, and a buncha others, just research.

it's a 2.5L DOHC.. I guess it all depends on how much a custom system would cost.. if you have experience knowing that a custom system is usually cheaper then going with a prebuilt, then I'd go that route.. I originally thought of just finding a manufacturer for my Wagon.

There are many manufacturers for you brand of engine, of course they all elude me right now...I'll see if i can post you some info. Only Borla and Brullen come to mind, though there are at least 2 or 3 more, that are cheaper then the "boxed" solutions.

2.5 engines DOHC and SOHC both have the same exhaust ports on the block. And just because it says its for the Impreza or Forester doesn't mean you can't use it.

They're all the same engine. The only problem you might encounter when buying a complete setup is the mid-pipe would have to be lengthened.

The big difference comes down to whether or not you want normal or equal length headers. Both will get you increase air flow, and therefore more power. Between my custom hood, CAI and exhaust I'd have to guess around 15-20hp... no dyno, just by my butt.

Normal = boxer growl
Equal Length = slightly better power and response, but no more growl.
It also, depending on manufacturer sometimes replaces the stock cats with high flow ones as part of the setup.

I've been running this setup since 2002 and i absolutely love it. Under WOT it sounds down right evil.

Are you running a CAI? If you do the "out" of the engine, you probably should do the "in" as well.

if you want the burbly boxer sound all you really need to do is replace the stock muffler w/a straight through muffler or "glasspack."

2.25" from the y pipe back but since you have a newer car w/2 o2 sensors you will get a CEL if you go catless in either position.
