Hi people, just back from a JDM engine shop. the shop I went has few 1st Gen JDM Legacy turbo engine. But there are some questions that pop up that I really wanna knows the answer.....

The shop has 3 AWIC engine that 2 of them with auto tranny and 1 of them just the engine alone.

The one without tranny came with gold/silver intercooler and I would like to know will it be an RS-RA engine or just RS engine. The other one with auto tranny also with the gold/silver intercooler and the rest is the black intercooler.

I know there are 2 different engine in Japan on our model. What is the different on the gold and black intercooler engine?

Does anyone knows whats the different on RS, RS-R and RS-RA engine, will all those engine had use different turbo or all of them using the same turbo?
I am interesting on the one without tranny but would like to know what kind of engine will it be.....
Thanks for answer

Ben

The JDM engines should be EJ20s, to start, meaning they aren't EJ22s. Get it?

Depending on where these engines came from, and whether or not, and to what degree they have been modded, you'll most likely find that all three of them have the same turbocharger.

Oh, and RS-RA engines are teh sex.

The RS-RA has "tuned by STi" and some other crap written on the AWIC.

You should look at the valve covers on the engines, if those are gold aswell then most likely they are RS-RA engines. If they are, you should get in touch with me, as I want one of these. Here's some info on them: http://www.decal-co.com/out-flat/variation-e.html

I am not too sure about the valve cover color, since it looks like silver or gold, but the intercooler I am sure is gold color.....
Since those engine importer don't know what is the spec of the engine, are there are any way to verify it?

Who cares? If they're RS-RA, they're worth getting and rebuilding if you have to.

But if they're RS they may not be worth it.

Well, as from the info of the Japanese website about the RS and RS-RA engine, I don't think the one I saw is the RS-RA engine. but for the price as lower then $1000 Cad. I think its OK price of it. I have to check again this week before I going to buy it for my car.

Hi Jr.SubaruLvr, the other shop that carries some old model turbo engine is called Best Japanese Engine. The shop locate near Keele and Finch, you could find it at yellow page.
Also you should call and go to the shop to see hows the condition of the engine, since those guys always said their engine has low Km but some of them have broken cam cover that makes me worry about the internal damage...
Good luck

I was going to be very surprised if an importer was sitting on 2 RS-RA's since production numbers weren't much over 1000. Regardless, they are still good engines, and the price seems all right. Does the one without a tranny have a flywheel or was it an auto as well? Many of the manuals got Vf-8's or VF-12, which are about as powerful as a TDO5-16g. That would be the one to pick up. Otherwise, the turbo will be the same VF-10 found on USDM autos.

And be sure to get the ingnitor in the deal. That is a key component of the coil on plug ignition, and will make the swap much simpler to perform...

The VF8 came on all JDM manuals, the VF12 came only on Liberty RS manuals. The VF10 only came on non-usdm autos. All USDM legacys got the VF11, as far as I can tell. I mean, I've got two VF11's here, both from auto cars. Ryan has two VF11's both from manual cars. I'm fairly confident we only got VF11's. VF10's are clocked different. As far as the EDM cars, I'd be willing to bet those are VF8's and/or VF10's.

Thawa,
I misspoke, I meant to say that the VF-10 came on USDM manuals, and our autos got the vf-11. This is the first that I have heard any different. The only difference in them is one fan blade. And you are also correct that JDM VF-10's are clocked differently to meet to the AWIC...

Well that's not true though. Both of Ryan's turbos are VF11's, one from a 91, one from a 94, both manual. Was your old one a VF10 or VF11?

Yeah, me (93 5MT) and Phil (94 5MT) both had VF11s as well. And the OEM parts catalog only lists one part number for all US-market B10-chassis turbos.

Hi People, I just got the enigne from one of the JDM importer and its a RS engine.
The engine will be deliver to the shop at monday and will ask the shop to do the compassion test before install.
Matt. I know I've been ask this questions many time but I would like to have an update from you... have you put 2 turbo ignitor to work with the JDM ECU or you did put a SVX ignitor to make the engine run with JDM ECU.
I have the JDM ECU sitting for 2 years and would like to put it in and run as like JDM car this time, so any info will be help.
Thanks everyone's input and will report after install the new engine in....
Have a good long weekend

Ben
