This being my first post on these forums, I'd like to say hello.
But I must get to the point. I've just bought myself a nice shiny Legacy (Or Liberty as it is called here in Australia), a 1992 model.
I want to change the stock steering wheel to a nicer one, and was wondering if i will have problems with the cruise control lever. Will I only have problems with certain types of wheel? Or will it be too much effort, seeing as I want to keep the cruise control function.
Cheers for any assistance.
Will.

I haven't tried myself, but I think you could keep the cruise control functionality with an aftermarket steering wheel. It would require a bit of work, but I think it could be done.
I've been looking at doing this myself, but haven't had the $$.
Perth is a nice place. I was over in Bunbury visiting my parents over christmas......

I have an aftermarket steering wheel and it doesn't have cruise function.
You could swap in the Momo wheels from early STi's and they look very nice and should have the cruise lever. Really, you should be able to swap in any other Subaru steering wheel. So if there's a model that has a steering wheel you like then I'd start looking for it.

I've got a Momo from a BD legacy twin turbo I think. Anyway I'm mounting the cruise in the plastic housing that covers the indicator and wiper levers, I'm just going to dremel a slot in the side where the key is, and crazy glue it in. I'll post pics when done.

I was thinking of getting a Grant wheel, and making an aluminum bracket to mount the cruise lever on.

would it be possible to just fab up a new cruise switch somewhere on the dash?

Sure, right on the panel you've got your alarm LED at, which is where Subaru of Puyallup mounted my 'factory' cruise control module. It was ugly, bulky, and did not look like it was 'factory'. It was a K&N unit, for chrissake!

i was thinking more along the lines of the tray under the handbrake or somewhere near the shifter

I don't think any of the early STi's had cruise. I don't even think any of the early momo or nardi wheels had cruise.
