Shattered the tranny!

6k in first jumping through traffic on 101 yesterday, shifted to 2nd and Shattered something in my tranny yesterday.

I was shifting from 6k in 1st to 2nd, but was off the gas and something went "clunk-bang".

Still drove and wasnt a gear, but I suspect something attached to the main shaft because I could shift into all gears but the "bang bang click" repeat incessently, would go away for the most part with the clutch in, and go away all the time when stopped. And had no problems in gear, except for the horrible noise coming from the tranny.

I pulled the motor yesterday (getting good, took 1 hour 15 minutes), and pulled the tranny today. Will powerwash it tommorrow and tear it apart and see what I broke.

So basically, the monster flywheel combined with the Kennedy 6-puck transfers huge torque. Too much for my 220,000 mile tranny to take.

Oh yeah,

I pulled the motor and tranny in the drive in basement of my mothers beach house. So the reddevil lives for now in a beach house basement. The motor is sitting out of the wagon and awaiting a rebuilt tranny. Thank God Ace Hardware had a rental engine hoist.

Shatter gears.

I just pulled the tranny apart and I have a gear with shattered teeth on the main shaft, and a gear with 4-5 missing teeth on the bottom shaft.

Shafts are out and I am going to go to a tranny shop and get the right parts and possibly have them pull them off and press back on.

Heck, tranny might be back in the wagon by Friday.!

Oh yeah, the sucky ass thing is I did this 100 miles away from my house and shop. I pulled the motor and tranny out in my moms beach house, lugged the tranny home yesterday and have to have it running ASAP.

that's why you have a spare car when your vehicle is unreliable... Like if you have a ford

I will be driving it back to the beach house in my Ford 350!

I've had my F-150 for six years and the only time it has let me down was when we had a week of -20's temps, and I have no block heater. Hell, it's the most dependable vehicle I've ever been around!

Sorry for the hi-jack. I've got a 5mt in my garage with second gear gone, also.

Attention, attention!

Never ever break 2nd gear.

There is no replacement part available in the United States! It has to be ordered from Japan where is takes 2-12 weeks. It might even have to be made by Subaru! The part number is a viable number, but thats it.

There are three main shafts available in Georgia, but they don't do me any good without the damn 2nd gear ring.

Fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look for a used tranny at a junkyard to steel parts from.

Pre 97 tranny internals for the GC are similar, IIRC.

Also, WRX transmissions will bolt right up with VERY mild work. Swap the gears for the center diff, and bolt it up. You may want to consider that.

you cant mix old style and new style tranny parts in some aspects... like you cant use a new style transfer case, and old style gears (or vice versa), they dont work, but if you use the transfer case + gears that came in it, that works (like a WRX case mixed with a tlegacy center diff casing and guts). i have a spare turbo legacy gearset that needs a rebuild for when i blow up the impreza one in my tranny now  .

if i were you doug i would just find a parts transmission, and piece together one good one out of what you have. or if you have some money, get a WRX tranny to hold you over.

Yeah I ended up with a junker tranny 3 hours of driving, 10 gallons of gas and $100 later, today.

I am just hoping I can get the main shaft and #2 out of it!

I would like to do some custom drivetrain stuff but right now I don't have the money and would love to get it back on the road again for the WCSS! And 5 days of driving between fixes is just annoying!

I dont think my transmission is gonna last too long once i turn the boost up to 18psi. It would be nice to have the money for a gearset.

If you have weak clutch disk, it should last longer. Thats for damn sure.

I am seriously considering getting rid of my 100% new flywheel, and maybe the Kennedy 6 puck disk. All I know is I need somthing that gives before 2nd gear does.
