Sorry for the ignorance guys, I have an impreza but am going to do a legacy ej22t swap into my 95 coupe. I have had conflicting info and keep getting the USDM and JDM models mixed up, is our first gen USDM legacy turbo intercooled or not? what type if it is?
no BOV right?
thanks, just trying to clear stuff up, the engine is on the way to my house right now, need to know if i need to purchase more parts or not
thanks

no it's not intercooled, and no it does not have BOV.
It has a bypass valve.

oh ok, but a lot of people do intercool it though correct? is that worthwile cost wise and power wise?
ill keep searching around your forums as well.
thanks!

yes, there's quite a few people that do add intercoolers. They do this mainly so they can turn up the boost. However there's only so much you can do that with the stock turbo before it becomes really inefficient. So as you can see, depending on what you want to do, and how much power you want to make will determine what you should do.
If you just want to run the stock turbo legacy motor without any tweaking, it'll work just fine without an intercooler.

id like to run it stock for a while, then i will be getting some sort of e-manage to help me control fuel delivery since i am running it on my EJ18 ECU. that will come first, then ill look into cranking boost, I/C, and even getting a bigger turbo, but i have to do my research.

Why not get a turbo legacy ECU?

because it costs money that i dont have... and matt monson at nasioc said i could do it with my 1.8 ecu. im not sure if the legacy ecu would hook up to all my 1.8L accesories anyways.. but yeah, id have to get a full wiring harness too which costs money too.

to do it right it cost alot of money..

Why would you have to get a full wiring harness?

yeah, money comes in slowly for me though lol, supposively if i get an e-manage to control fuel and timing, it will run great. but i have to research all of that stuff.

btw, what is the best way to turn up the boost? and what do people usually do with the stock turbo?
thanks

A turbo legacy ECU and associated sensors would be cheaper than an e-manage.

ok ill make sure i figure out both options, thanks

If you can do a little bit of wiring the stock turbo ECU will run it well. You don't need a new harness just a few changes and a few new wires run.

oh, well i thought that the plugs are different... but i guess that could be avoided with splicing.
can someone tell me how the turbo is controlled? does the computer have any effect on it or is it completely on wastegate? and if so how do you turn up the boost?
thanks

Use some keywords like:
boost
control
stock
computer
turn
up
I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

I'd be careful using an N/A computer with the Turbo motor, unless you have a PerfectPower like Todd, or something similar. A naturally aspirated motor doesn't have a MAP sensor and therefore will not enrich the mixture under boost=detonation.

hmmm i was wondering what exactly the side effects of not having the MAP would be, thanks for the info.
at NASIOC there are a couple people who have done this exact swap and said it ran strong, one of them for 35k miles. Again ill see how it goes and if i need an AFC or ITC i can get those.
thanks

It's not the lack of a MAP sensor so much as the programming being different.
You could at least put on a rising rate fuel pressure regulator to enrich the mixture on boost.

Hey sorry to bump this old thread, but i'm doing a search on the EJ22T and I ran into this thread.
I want to swap the EJ22T into my 95 Impreza L, So I don't need the wiring harness from the Legacy then?
I will be getting the ECU from the Legacy, but so it seems I'me just moving some wires around in the Plug in Connector?

You won't be able to just swap pins around; the ECU connectors on your Impreza are different from those on the Legacy.

So I will need the wire harness then?

You'll need something. You could install the Legacy wiring harness. Or you could clip the connectors off a Legacy wiring harness and patch them in place of your current connectors.

well I would have the whole ECU from the EJ22T as well as all the wires.
I just don't understand what you mean by clipping the wires.. Why would I want to clip the wires to the EJ22T that came from that motor but going in a 95 Impreza L?

So you could adapt your stock harness to plug into the EJ22T ECU.
