Ok, for those who have done this:

are there any starter issues?> do you have to get a WRX one?

Were there any issues period?

The stock starter works fine.

No issues at all. Everything just fits right up.

The stock WRX flywheel bolts are a little shorter than the stock Legacy flywheel bolts, I think, but people have used either ones without problems.

You don't need to switch starters.

The only issue is that it's easiest to put the throw out bearing on the tranny's spline then on the pressure plate. This will make it a lot easier to get the tranny back on and it will click into place when you put them back together.

Also go ahead and replace your tranny mount to a STI group N. Not a must but I highly recommend it.

Again, Vikash with his lightening fast filangies slips his post in under mine with super human dexterity!

what if you switch to a RS transmission for the nice 4.11 ratio and a good rear LSD?

Matt - hehehe... Yeah, but you offered good advice.

Greg - I don't think you can put a pull-type clutch on an RS transmission without some modding of (at least) the bellhousing.

can you swap the RS clutch too?

and why is this in the exhaust thread? is he exhausted thinking about the swap?

You can use an RS clutch with the RS transmission on our cars, yes. I don't know for sure whether or not our stock clutch master cylinder is sized appropriately for the RS slave cylinder, though. If not, I would imagine the RS master would bolt onto our cars.

Huh? RS has a clutch cable not hydraulic.... right?

Nope, hydraulic.

Maybe he exhausted all of his options for a flywheel/clutch.

this makes me happy because i am pretty sure a used RS tranny/rear end will be way cheaper to optain than it would be to fix this SS trans if it should ever break.

Damn. Now you are going to make me walk all the way over to the parking garage to confirm that I have no clue what kind of clutch I have!!!

Edit - yeah you're right. I'm an idiot and my RS does have a hydraulic clutch.

Take it from me.... the RS gear ratios are SOOOOO much better. My number one complaint with the SS is the useless ratios. I almost wish my SS gears would kick the bucket so I had an excuse to throw money at used RS setup.

that is one thing suabru has always been very good at. they have always given thier less powerfull cars very good gear ratios to compensate for the lack of power.

how hard was the swap?

Auto to manual? Not that bad. Probably a 3 or so out of 5.

RS clutch parts (at least out of a 2002) are a 100% match for 1990 clutch parts.

I am about 95% sure that if you get a push style tranny, all you have to do is mount the pull style parts on the tranny itself. It may take a little bashing with a hammer, but it should work. I compared the guts of a WRX tranny to mine and there was about 0% on what goes on inside. The difference is how the clutch fork is moved, ie push vs pulled. The clutch could care less.

I actually clicked on the ENGINE forum thread button. After that, I just typed.

Going back to the RS tranny thing, our 01 RS can pretty much keep up with the turbo Legacy due to the 4:11 gears. It feels like I have to wind out the legacy where the RS pulls harder. I would so like to go with the 16G/fmic, and then put a 4:44 ratio in this car. THAT WOULD GO LIKE MAD!

Now I just have to go harvest my money tree.

I like the RS gears but i dont know how i feel about first. Under wot its almost imposible to shift at 6500 rpm before it goes into the red. Second gear is a bit more tolerable.

Just curious matt. Have you actually installed everything with the throwout bearing snapped in the pp? From my experience...and I snapped the sucker in....there's pretty much no way to install it, unless it's on the tranny snout.

No. When we did mine we initially tried to do it with the throwout bearing snapped in the PP but couldn't get the tranny back on either. We could get it close but the tranny spline would bind in the throwout bearing making it impossible to get the bellhousings to come tight together. There was like 8 of us trying for 6-7 hours to get it back together this way, to no avail and we gave up. We went at it again a couple days later and Phils buddy had told him about putting the TOB on the tranny snout in the mean time and then it went together lickity split.
