Knock sound

I know these questions are impossible, but let me know if you have any thoughts.
Knocking sound
Sounds like: repetitive knocking on something thick and heavy, like wood.
Does NOT sound like: CV joint or exhaust heat shields
location: undercarriage - at a point below where the stickshift is
occurance:
when coasting over bumps
more often when braking.... or accelerating hard uphill
not related to car speed or engine speed
drivetrain:
AWD, 5MT
Any thoughts? I have a rallyX this weekend, so I am sure to finish off whatever problem was slowly developing.
Thanks!
Sam

BUMP
Anyone? Anyone? Buller?
It is happening more often since I rallyX'd it again this weekend.
Mechanic put it on a lift for just 5 minutes and poked around - couldn't find anything obvious.

What does it do in relation to speed?

How is your tranny mount? Check to see that the driveshaft is not touching anywhere. The repetition points to something like the driveshaft of half-shafts. Look for areas that are clean in relation to its surrounding. Like no mud where the touching piece is knocking it off or scraped paint.
If Sti tranny mount has not been done yet, this is strongly recommended.

Subyluvr - No relation to speed. It is just a random series of clunks that sounds like something is loose as I go over bumpy roads..... EXCEPT it also seems to be induced on smooth roads by hard accelerating or braking.
Brat 4x4 - I will crawl under there and check the tranny mount. If the mount is just loose or degraded or something, how would I be able to tell? Would it move if I shove it or something like that?
[PS - I heard more rallyX's are in store at Beaverun... represent! Sorry to jack my own thread.]

I'll make it easy for you. If the mount is original... replace it. Either OEM or STi (which is also OEM, but you know what I mean

). I replaced my tranny mount and the old one I could bend in half with my hands. The STi one felt like a brick in my hands. So you pretty much have half a nerf football holding your tranny in place right now. Also, if you have ANY tranny or shifting issues this will solve half if not all of them.
Keep me posted about Rally-X's at beaver run either here or on LERSOC. Beaver Run is only 1 hour away from me. I won't run any until I get my suspension done a.k.a. Spring 2004. But I might try a couple of laps beforehand if they let me. I did the roadcourse on open lap day and my struts are goooone.

Front caliper bolts loose?
try tightening them?
These are the 2 17mm bolts which hold the entire caliper on.
mine also clunked when i broke and set off hard.
now ok
