Replace speedometer gear inside the auto tranny no teardown?

Just heard that the speedo gear that is inside the auto tranny can be replaced by pulling out the passenger side axle and bearing......could this be tru?

how hard would it be to get out the bearing? are there seals and such that need replaced afterwards. Anybody wanna give me a hand.. I have my spare auto turbo tranny sitting in my backyard, and it had a working speedo gear before it was switched-so with the spare tranny and maybe an extra hand to help out, I was thinking of trying to do this myself. I could practice on the extra auto tranny, and if it looks likely to be successful, would order the new gear (11.00 new from the dealer) to put in my current tranny

thoughts? extra hand? what tools do i need to have around?
Matt M?

anybody?

I don't think you can replace it like that.

I don't know much about the 4EAT, but with the 5MT, the only way to replace the speedo gear, is by splitting the case.

Yeah, it sounds like you'll need to split the case, as the speedo cable comes into the tranny on the top, and IIRC, somewhere near the middle. . . So I don't see how your plan would net you the results you want. Is there even a tranny entry right thurr?
