5MT dosn't move with the rear diff out?

I am parting out a 90 wagon with a 5MT, I drove it to my shop, pulled out the rear diff and axles thinking I could move it out of the way when I was done, well it don't move. I can hear the drive shaft flopping around but the car just sits there. Is this right? I didn't give it alot of gas, I didn't want the drive shaft to come through the floor.
I drove a 4EAT with the drive shaft disconected at the diff end, I just guessed the 5MT would move too.

You could make it sort of limp around if you gave it a lot of gas. It takes quite a bit to get the center differential to lock up enough to overcome nearly 100% slippage.
Could you maybe disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission and plug up the hole in the tranny with something?

I still don't understand this. If the rear axles are gone wouldn't the car "think" that the rear wheels are slipping and put power to the front wheels?

Yes, that's correct. But, the viscous coupling in the center diff doesn't actually transfer that much torque. It certainly can't fully lock up the way many rear LSDs can. With a 5MT there will always be a certain amount of front/rear slip.
If you have access to another AWD 5MT Legacy, try pulling an axle and driving the car. You'll see what you need to do to get the car to move.
With an automatic it's completely different; the front axle is always 100% coupled to the transmission's output shaft anyway.

There is a guy on the USMB with a bad diff and is thinking of removeing the rear axles.........I told them about this thread.
I don't realy NEED to move the car, I was just suprised as hell when it just SAT THERE!!! As long as this is considered normal I am okay with this.

What kind of tranny does the guy on usmb have? If the differential is open he shouldn't have a problem.

My rear diff was open.
I think the car on the USMB is an Outback

My car has the rear axles removed and the driveshaft cut off and it moves fine.

The fact that it doesn't work could mean that there are bigger problems. The tranny should work regardless of a driveshaft being there (my 86 GL worked with it out). Maybe you have a cooked tranny or front dif.

Doesn't that car have an open center differential though? Was it FT4WD?

The 86 GL was 4WD period. Not full time. It was 50/50 split.

I don't get that. Did it have a 2WD, 4WD HI, and 4WD LO lever?
Either way it had an open center differential.

Sooooooo.....is there a problem if the 5MT Legacy dosen't move without the rear diff conected? If 91White-T's car goes without a rear diff, why dosen't mine?
