hello folks,

sometimes my auto tranny on my 92 legacy fwd doesn't shift out of park. when i press the button on the shifter, the button doesn't want to go in and i'm forced to use the alternate method which is to use the 2nd putton on the console. what might the problem be?

The interlock system is preventing you from shifting. That button at the front of the shifter surround overrides the interlock.

I don't know that much about the interlock system, but it basically requires that the ignition be on and that you press the brake pedal in order to shift. There's a solenoid in the shifter mechanism I think. So the problem could be that solenoid or it could be one of the switches or the wiring.

Maybe someone else can give you more detailed information.

Does it tend to give you this problem only when it's cold or when it's rainy or anything like that?

had same problem on my 95 wagon. the solenoid that allows the shifter to move out of park when you press the brake pedal is not working properly. i took apart the center console and used a zip tie to fix the solenoid in the release position. now i can shift into park w/out pressing the brakes. the solenoids ranged in price from 25 to 120 new depending on vin. that is why i chose the zip tie method! good luck.
