Stock alarm system? signal lights acting funny

after turning off the engine.

Bare with me this is a long post:

dunno if i've accidentally set the security system to valet or something... i bought the car used and have never understood how to get the damn alarm to work.

basically it's never sounded while i've had the car.
but while i was being shown it, it kept going off if the door was left open for too long etc.

I don't know what possessed me this morning, but i think after arriving at a clients i flipped the toggle (not labelled of course) to the right and then back to the left. then i got out of the car and pressed the lock button.

the alarm beeped at me!
i was so surprised i unlocked the door and it beeped at me again.
i went to lock it again, and it no longer beeped. I opened the door, flipped the switch again and nothing happened. I think i opened the hood flicked the hood sensor and may have shifted the wire back and forth that i believe runs from the alarm to the negative post on the battery (don't ask me, but that's the case)

i think i got it to beep at me again, and then i went about my service visit.

didn't even look at it during the next appointment.

my 3rd appointment today i noticed what sounded like an electrical switch being turned on and off every 5 or 6 seconds.

i locked the door again with no sound.

as i'm walking away from my car i turn back and see the signal lights, sidemarkers are blink in rythmn to the sound i was hearing.

when i turn the car on, this behaviour stops.

I've already tried flicking the toggle again, one way then locking then the otherway and locking.

I've also tried doing this with the engine running, and it's made no difference.

As far as i know this is the stock alarm for my legacy.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm a little afraid that either i'm going to ruin some light bulbs or drain the battery.

Thanks in advance.
