My recently bought '89 legacy auto has had the 'check engine' light flashing on and off. Code pulled indicates the idle control valve.
Experiencing lack of power uphill (foot to the floor but only creeping up steep slopes) and automatic gear changes are not very smooth in transition. Idle seems normal.

Any tips how to fix this problem/ any similar experiences from any other users? Any assistance greatly appreciated

You may want to try resetting the ECU. If you get the same code, replace the IAC valve.
