Would you replace a bad 2.5 with a 2.2?

I just picked up a 99 GT with the overheating problem, pretty cheap.
If it is only the head gasket, I will just replace them and hope for the best, but if the head or block is cracked I was playing with the idea of replacing the motor with an older 2.2 with 90k on it. Is this a dumb idea? We are not worried about loss of performance, this is to be my wife's winter car, just transportation. We try to keep or favorite cars out of the salt and slop.

The 2.2 may work, if all of the sensors fit and the ECU doesn't have too much of a problem with it. I'd say do it. If it were a 2000, i'd veto it, cause the BE is a tubby bitch, but the BD not so much. Also, the BD/BG had the 2.2 as an option in those years, so not much is likely to be different, ECU and sensor-wise.

Dave - A Mass Air-Flow metered car shouldn't mind whatever displacement is being used right? I mean, the ECU calculates volumetric efficiency based on the MAF reading, right? I bet the Phase 2 EJ25 ECU would have no problem running an EJ22. Espically if the sensors are the same.

There are two JY's that I go to, both of them are set up so that any good stuff (like GT wheels) end up in their body shop supply house and the rest of the cars are put out to get picked apart. I did find some chrome alloy Lincoln wheels that some how got stuck into a trunk and I found them before whoever put them there came back. I have no clue as to what I am gonna do with them. Definitely NYC wheels.
Might look good on a "BUS"

It all depends on the year of the 2.2l If it is a phase I from one of our Legacies it will be a pain to get everything hooked up right. If it is a later 2.2l things like IAC the TPS will potentially be compabitle. That is what I would look into before making the swap...

Does this mean that reality is going to give me a problem with what I thought was a simple and cheap solution?
I guess I better hope that it is nothing more than a head gasket.
