Ej22e with Delta cams dyno'd...

So,
as some of you know, the Ej20G with Ej22T heads I built met an untimely death with a timing belt accident that was not of my doing. Anyways, the owner needed the car back on the road with a quickness, so I built him another engine.

It is a 1990 Legacy Ej22E engine with Delta cams installed. He's using Ej22T pink injectors. He also has a set of Borla headers on it. Lastly, it is tuned with the E-manage that used to be for the turbo car. He got 110whp and 120tq on MacSport's dyno in Denver. For comparison, a stock 2.5RS puts down 100-105whp on the same dyno. So, I figure we're talking about roughly 170-175 to the crank. Not to shabby for a 15 year old engine with 125k mi on it and originally rated at 140hp...

In short, if you haven't considered Delta cams, think about it. For $165 you can't go wrong. CCR in Denver has been using them on their rebuilds for years. And the cams are ultimately Comp cams sold by Delta...

Matt, I've heard you talking about the cams before and have kept a keen interest. Is this a mod that will require engine management and headers too? I have an extra set of cams now from my old EJ22e that I've thought about hanging onto. I'm down for the $165 and the work to install them but I couldn't swing the rest :-/.

If you've already answered this a lot, just hit me with the search stick :), it's been a long day and I'm tired.

No,
No search stick for you. This car is actually a '94 Impreza, but I like to update here because we are using Legacy parts in it.

It absolutely would NOT require EM to run it in an anotherwise stock '90-94 Legacy. You won't see the same gains of 30+hp without a header or an ECU, but you would definitely see something like 15hp or so. There are a bunch of Ej22 powered cars in Colorado that have these cams in them. But they aren't folk in the preformance community. They are just a very standard upgrade that CCR offers when they rebuild a customer's engine...

Hmm... sounds like I might have a next step after my front brakes. Thanks, I'll definately be looking into this more. The only thing required to do the cams is to remove the heads and a few things? I remember at one point shims got mentioned in reference to cam changes, is this something that I need and/or will be provided with?

Thanks and glad you've kept us up to date.

man. that sounds pretty sick. would a turbo engine gain much of anything from having a cam upgrade like that?

I'm not sure what lifters your heads have, but i would hazard a guess that they are like the legacy turbo ones. The shims are just washers that go in under the HLA's.

erm, it's actually http://www.deltacam.com/. This actually sounds like a nice deal, but I think I should do all the regular maintenance on my car before I start thinking about performance upgrades.

Thanks Dan, do you know if delta supplies the shims when you get cams done?

That is good to know. My 22t headgasket blew so I am disassembling the heads today actually. As a matter of fact I put my cams in a box destined for delta just before i logged on.

Any guess with gains on a turbo motor with engine management.

Also who has pics of their head ports? I wanna see especially if they have been ported and polished.

I dunno about gains, my car put down 123 whp on a dyno dynamics when the turbo was overboosting and somewhere around 155 whp on a dyno jet with the cams, stock turbo, intercooler and safc II. I posted the graphs a long time ago so you should be able to find them if you search.

cant believe I didnt get some of these done when I was building my motor :( all that compression would love some cams.
how hard is it to pull the cams with the motor in the car? looks kinda tight.
