I have a 92 legacy SS with a 5mt. I'm not positive, but i'm pretty sure 1st gear blew out and i'm wondering if it would be better to see if i can have the trans rebuilt, or if i should just get another one. If I do have to get another one, does anyone know where i can find another one at a reasonable price? Any information on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you think 1st is broken? What is happening with the car that makes you think that?
It WILL be cheaper to find another tranny and swap them. It costs a packet to rebuild a tranny. Local shop charges, right around $2k in labor and misc. fluids and parts to pull the tranny from the car, rebuild the tranny, and reinstall it in the car.
Go to a junkyard.

It won't go into first, and all other gears work. I'm pretty sure the syncros went out cuz it's hard as hell to get it in any other gear. But at an idle with my foot off the clutch all you hear is metal grinding. it's quite sickening.

Yea, sounds like a blown synchro, rather than an acutal blown gear.
Replace the tranny, it's cheaper than rebuilding.

I agree with BAC5.2. I recently had a quote done by a tranny shop owner guy I know. I took it in because 2nd is a little rough sometimes. He took it for a ride and told me it would be a long time before he'd consider ripping my tranny apart to change syncros. His going rate is $1,200, but I'm sure he'd charge me a little less. He told me to consider another tranny if and when mine's kaput.

ok, so second question would be then, where can i find one? i've tried every local junkyard and shop, and i've only found one, but they want 1,100 for it.
