Power Window and vents

I just bought the 1990 Legacy L. Besides needing brakes the driver's side power window won't work all the other switches work. Also the vents won't blow. The A/C blows cold, but it blows out the vents in the floor. The defroster works it just seems the vents on the dash that don't work. Any suggestions about the vents and is it very hard to get the door panel off to check the power window switch.

Yeah the door panel may seem daunting, but its just a one time thing, once you do it you'll get it. Unscrew the three screws by the speaker, then take the small square thing off under the armrest area and unscrew that, then at the top of the handle(not where the lock is, but the pull handle) pull out that black foam stuff and unscrew that, then jut pop off the self-tapping screws I usually start from the speaker area and go twords the rear of the car, just take your time and slowly pull till you hear a loud pop, you might think you broke somehting but you didnt, anyways pull on all of them then sort of lift the door panel up and away, and disconnect any wires, then you can check the power window switch. Mine only worked up and down for the drivers door, it didn't do auto so I bought a used one, and put it in there, whole time for the job about 5-10 mins.

The vent system not working. I believe it is an issue with the connector/wiring that plugs into the hvac controls.

if you bang on the dash just above the hvac controls, that works for me to get it working again. I need to take apart the dash to try and find a more permenant fix. Some people have said the connector get's loose, and putting something underneith it helps.

The vent issue could just be stuck baffles, couldn't it? Aren't the controls for the baffles connected to cables? Perhaps the cable connection in the dash for the vent setting has come loose?

I'm just recalling what I see every once in a while. Had a 1991 Corolla with slide controls for the HVAC, and I'm sure they're very similar. :D

the cold/hot is cable controlled. The vent system control is electronic.

Is it hard to take the dash apart to get to the HVAC controls? If I get the brakes, the power window swich, and the vents to work I'm in business. Then I can just enjoy driving and working towards my goal of 300,000 miles. The car is tight and I love to drive it. It has no rust which for a 13yr old car I thought was pretty good. Both of my sisters swear by Subaru's.

You might be able to reach up to that switch from below......I've been told it a pain......if you want to get at it from the front side, you need to remove the black trim around the gauges and all that stuff.

My windshield vent on the passenger side never flows air, same for the vent on top of the passenger door. What should I look for when I take the dash apart for the heater core?

Homeslice, If I find out that is what my problem is how much for the drivers side window switch? Also would you happen to have the wiper assembly for the back wiper on a 90 legacy L? I put washer fluid in it the other day and the little nipple on the squirter is broke off, so the fluid just shoots straight up in the air and not at the window

The switchest are all one unit. You would need pretty much the whole switch assembly.

alrighty.... I know ALL about the hvac controls. What ya gotta do to get to them.... Pull the black piece that goes around your speedo, you have to remove all the switches in the dash for this, and the square thingy that pops out. unscrew screws, and the ones up top of the gauge cluster. i can take photos if need be, then open your cupholer. there'll be screws there. pull them, then tip the black plastic thing forward. you may have to bend the top part of the dash for this. dont worry, it wont damage it. then you have another set of screws, undo those, and pop the plastic thign that goes around your radio off. it'll be easy if you take your ashtray out. THEN... pull the hvac unit out, you may have to disconnect the cable under the glove box to pull it out all the way. now you're done. :)
