Will the car move with a broken axle?

I'm buying a 91ss automatic, the guy says the transmission is "totally out" of it, I went to check on it the other day and I found that when you start the car and put it in gear it makes a horrible sound, upon closer inspection, I find that the outer cv joint is completely broken, hence the horrible noise. If I put a new axle on the car is there a chance that there's nothing really wrong with the trannny, just misdiagnosed broken axle. thanks damon

It'll move, sure. But, you'll thrash things in the process. Just have it hauled to your house for little or no dough and replace the half-shaft there.

Which axle....front or rear?
You could possibly cause premature wear to the transmission . If the axle is in the front, there is no LSD. That will create a speed difference between the front and rear. The TCU would adjust power output, and the car "should" move....assuming everything is working correctly.

I would severely advise against it. The potential damage will cost a lot more than getting it hauled.

I'm not worried about damaging the car, I just want to know if the guy could have heard the noise that the car makes when you put it in gear and assumed that it was a bad tranny. I know some of the autos had problems with the awd going bad and if that's the case I think that probably would keep the car from moving since the front diff is open. Also If it doesn't have lsd in the rear that could make it not move if the front axle is broke. just my theory. thanks for the help everyone. btw i started to change the axle but ran out of daylight, I'll try to finish up this weekend.
