I got to pull out my xtra set of headlights...but looking at that picture in the motorsports forum of the yellow legacy w/ reverse cold air scoop and weird headlight setup...
Well, I've though a lot about how our headlights could be replaced. I found these lights that look pretty good:
http://www.susquehanna.com/susq/hella/90mm.htm
They are 90mm round...small like projectors, but I think maybe they are reflector lamps. Anyways, I was thinking maybe these are compact enough that there is enough room with them for us to have a quad lamp setup. I just can't decide what the best way to do it would be. I was thinking about the possibility of making something out of fiberglass, or sheetmetal, or something...that basically fills the hole left by removing the stock lamps, and has approx the shape of the stock lights. It would have two holes for the hella lamps, but maybe with a tapered lip going into the holes towards the lamp. The assembly could be painted body color...or black or something. The other thing I was thinking, and I have to take a look at the stock lamp design, is maybe one could gut the stock lamp assembly and somehow mount the hellas behind the plastic lens of the original stock headlights.
Maybe I will see if I could photoshop something up...
What does everyone think?

That would make an interesting product to market. Pretty much a projector-style headlamp assembly for retrofitting sealed-beam-style lamps onto the Subbies. :D

I like the idea of putting it behind the plastic lens. I think the cars'd look tacky with headlights like a vw or honda or focus

anyone have a good high quality close up of the front of the car, straight on, something that would be good for photoshopping some quad headlight picts? Maybe you could poiint me in the right direction, a link or something.
thanks

I have a set of those Hella 90mm lights you linked to. They are really, really nice. The low beams are projectors and the high beams are freeform reflectors. Both use H9 bulbs, which are a recently developed extremely efficient halogen bulb. Their output is really second only to HIDs. The beam pattern is very good; the low beam is an ECE-style Z-pattern.

I planned to try to fit them into some stock headlamp housings when I have time.

They are a bit too tall to fit neatly inside the 92-94 housings, so it would require some cutting of the housing itself. They'd probably fit better in the 90-91 housings (which is convenient since those are the ones that need lighting improvement more).

You can't just stick them behind the stock plastic lenses, since those lenses are fluted and part of the optics. My plan was to put them in without lenses and then install a pair of clear headlight covers to kind of act as a protective non-fluted lens.

I am starting to suspect that I'll never get around to finishing this project, though, so I might be selling the lights...
