Ok, this is going to sound like a very strange swap to be doing but circumstance has me trying to swap a FWD (or possibly an NA AWD) 5MT into my (already 5MT)SS. From some searching I found that the hydraulic clutch will not work with the NA trans, but everything else should be ok. I'm trying to figure out everything I will need to do this, so far the problems I came up with are:

-swap hydraulic to cable clutch
-cross member/mount differences
-new clutch/pressure plate
-flywheel?

I know a lot of you have done tranny swaps so hopefully I can learn from your experiences. Thanks

I 100% believe it can be done. I checked the clutch hook up area (push versus pull) and it looks like you just need to fab a mount or two.

cross member no need (I am 99 % sure)

RS pressure plate and $100 Kennedy 6 puck disk with a stock or better NA flywheel.

I don't think there are any crossmember differences. It's not like you're putting a 6MT in there or anything.

I think FWD and AWD crossmembers are different.

I realize swapping to a turbo-type clutch may be impractical, but could you use a hydraulic push-type clutch?

Go to a local junkyard and check out the outside specs. Maybe take digital photos of your exterior setup for comparison since the odds of finding a turbo is million to one.

why not go to entirely cable setup. that way all the mounts are there for you. transmission should come with the mounting stuff, its on the pitch stopper bracket. plus cable is way easier to work on.
are the pedals different hydro to cable? I imagine that the switches are the same.
you need the awd 5mt:
crossmember
driveshaft
cable:
clutch and flywheel: get an exedy off of ebay for $160

just go with the awd, not worth the effort to do a fwd swap.

dont all the hydraulic clutches both push and pull use a totally different(and way better) clutch lever that actually has a axle it rotates on rather than the cable style which sucks ass? if so I dont see an easy way to use hydro stuff on a cable trans. but anything can be done if you have the fab skills.

It has the turbo clutch. I will need to swap that to a cable clutch in order to use the NA trans, right? Will the turbo shifter work on a NA trans.?

Also, I'm assuming any FWD trans should work, like this one?

I would imagine the shifters would be compatible.

Hmm, I wonder if that transmission has a hydraulic clutch... if you get one that's already hydraulic you can probably get away with using your current master cylinder and pedal setup.

Ok, I see. You're right that would be impractical. I am going to try to research how easy/hard a cable clutch swap would be. Then I could use pretty much any NA trans (FWD or AWD), right?

Unless it was one meant for a hydrualic clutch. I don't know if any FWD transmissions used hydraulic clutches though.

this is a question kind of on the same note. I have a 92ss AT. I also have a 90ls 2.2 na mt. Can I swap the MT from the NA into the turbo? From my reading, it seems like I'll never find a SS MT for a donor. I know the tranny isn't as beefed but I'm pretty sure it will work and be easier to do because it's cable.

oh, and i'm a noob by the way ! Not new to scoobs or mechanics though. name is Ian

Yeah it'll work. You'll have to use all the n/a clutch stuff though. Whether you keep it cable or go hydraulic is up to you. But yes it would be easier to keep it cable.
