Removing AWD transfer case housing...

1990 AWD Legacy L sedan.
Hi guys,
Long time no post... but I still lurk...
My Legacy has finally redeemed itself and is proving to be a nice reliable car like I hoped it was going to be. ($4500 in parts later - but that's another story you guys help with previously...) To reward the cars newfound reliabilty and trouble free operation I got the car 15" Turbo alloys which improved handling quite nicely, and I'm replacing the duty solenoid C to cure the flashing power light and the torque bind that came with it.
Trouble is that the housing is not wanting to come off. I searched the BBS site with no luck - so I'm hoping one of you can shed some light. I suspect the top dowel is holding it on - I do have the bottom portion loose, and I can get a putty knife in as far as I can reach - but it still won't budge.
Am I missing something internally that has to be removed or undone? Is there anything inside the tranny that fastens to the tailhousing that's accessible from the pan? (I left the pan on)
Thanks for any advise you can provide!
