Thinking about buying a Legacy what should I check/look for?

I am thinking about buying a RHD 94 Legacy Wagon (AWD). It is a 2.2L automatic w/133K miles and is a factory built right hand drive. It is in the north east and has some rust showing behind the rear wheel wells.
I will be using it for my rural mail route, but I am a car guy and am interested in learning all I can about these cars.
Can anyone give me a list of things to look for durring the purchase process? Are there any common problems or issues with these cars? What would you look for before you buy it?
Also are there any online stores that sell cosmetic and performance accessories for the 94 legacy wagon?
Thanks in advance for all the help, Joe

Hey Joe,
RHD means it was probably an abused mail car already. Check the tires for uneven wear or different types. Post office might have been cheap and just replaced one tire if they got a flat, could be bad for the diffs.

Cosmetic stuff? Probably best to not get your hopes up.
Few places sell performance stuff for old Legacies. Parts from other Subies can usually be made to work.

Try searching for RHD here, there's been a bit of discussion on it.

Check for leaking valve cover gaskets, leaking cam seals & o-rings (on the rear of the heads), leaking moonroof if it has one. Any records available for transmission & differential oil changes? Timing belt? Water pump? The same stuff you would check on any car like good coolant & brake fluid. How do pads & rotors look? Also check between the gas filler neck & plastic guard on it for rust through the neck. It collects a lot of crap in there. Just pry back the tab that locks down the guard at the bottom of the neck & push the plastic guard away. Be careful, all kinds of sand will hit you in the face. Check for rusty exhaust while you're down there. Good luck if you decide to buy it.

You shouldn't buy it...but you should give me the phone number of the seller so I can tell them how I think they are trying to rip you off.

I just saw 2 of thses cars go for well over $3K on ebay. Not too long ago one sold in GA for $510.00 in great shape. Weird market for these things I guess.

When you test drive it, floor it and look in the rear view mirror and look for smoke. If it smokes, it needs a rebuild. (rings and head). Smoke doesnt mean it won't run great, but it won't pass DEQ.
