WRC BOV squeek

Hi all,
This is my first post.
I just brought a 1989 Subaru Legacy RS. I live in New Zealand if you think 1989 is a funny year for an RS. Anyways. I want my RS to make that WRC blow off value squeek.
Does anyone know what type of blow off value makes that noise?
There is one WRX in my club that does make that noise but it has no BOV???
Cheers
Hayden

Well, maybe it is a stock deverter valve with a bird call on it.

A year ago in August, I went to the Concourse at Pebble Beach.
Other than talking with Jay Leno about his 1918 Crane-Simplex, one of the other highlights was a 1920s sport runabout( can't remember the
name) that had pipe-organ type whistles on the exhaust pipe.
Talk about some hot notes
To be serious, the OEM bypass valve on my twgn can make some strange
chirps --when coming off 14 pounds boost.
The Crane-Simplex had 38 inch wheels.

The noise you're hearing on the WRC cars is a combination of both the BOV and the anti-lag system. Much information is available on either topic.

I am from NZ originally!! Where specifically are you located?
My uncle used to have a pimped out 1990 RS Legacy...
If you are ever needing engine work, he is the guy to go to!
His shop is: Precision Engines, Barry's Point RD, Auckland

Im in Nelson, New Zealand. Its at the top of the south island.
Auckland is abit of a drive from here, but thanks for a tip!
My 1989 RS legacy is pretty pimping too! It is a rallycar and thats why I want that WRC noise.
How much HP can I expect from a standard RS block and heads? I have some WRX STI version 3 heads, is it worth putting them on?
I want at least 300Hp at the flywheel.
Currently it feels faster than my mates 1996 WRX sti running 17psi, especially up hill. Car is pretty standard, I have a vf7 turbo (looks standard), AWIC, WRX RA inlet maniflod with 5th injector, standard fuel system, WRX RA computer with modified 14psi chip. Car has been lightened too 1150kg and has close ratio box, lsd front center and back, wrx ra brakes with ABS removed, alloy suspension a-arms.
I think thats it. Goes OK, But can't help but wont more power!
Cheers

Oh yeah. Car has Tein adjustable height, damper and camber on all four corners.
And man it handles good!!!

Yes...Nelson is a ways from Auckland...I am a South Islander as well (Timaru)...
It sounds like your car is already well put together, especially for rally...
I can imagine that the STi heads might make a small difference, but I don't know if it is necessarily worth putting them on...I really don't know the specs on them compared to the stock ones...

Timaru is a funnt little town. Got alot of family down that way as well.
Your over in the big smoke now!
Do you know the ashley forest sprint? its held in christchurch ever year. This legacy got 8th over all a couple of years ago, which the last owner driving. Beat lots of WRXs, EVOs. A Mitsi cordia won on the day, with a rear mounted 350 chev an a EVO 4WD driverchain, what a beast. It had about 700Hp to all four wheels and god knows how much torque!

try hks super sequential bov, it as the wrc sound

nobody mentioned this... but im pretty sure WRC cars dont have a BOV of BPV.
that sound you hear is "wastegate chatter" even though it has nothing to do with the wastegate. instead of venting air, air is pushed back out the turbo the other way which makes the chirping sound. part of the antilag system. it can be bad for your turbo, but as we know, WRC is beyond any of that.

dont WRC cars run open thru the wastgate? same as some pro drift cars. that would make that same flutter squick noise

hey- you have any idea what exactally the 5th injector does? i have it on my motor (v2 sti-RA) and have always been courious.

Wow, this thread has so many different bizarre, contradictory explanations for that squeeky noise.
I'm pretty sure it's the antilag based on when it occurs (because it squeks periodically the whole time you're off the throttle ). Every rally car I've heard at a Pro rally has one of two types of antilag - the type that just dumps extra fuel which explodes in the manifold like a cannon or more expensive teams don't have that - they just make the quiet little squeeky sound. Somebody told me that squeeky version used compressed nitrogen to spool the turbo, but that seems like BS. So I'm not sure what the actual mechanism is, but I bet it's antilag

hmm... that's a good question.... I'd always assumed it was a BOV, but as Natoe, they might not have one. The old Audi Groub B cars that my friend owns don't have them. It could just be compressor stall from a smaller turbo. Could also be a BOV very loud because it's in combnation with an anti-lag system, so there is a rediculous amount of boost the whole time the throttle is closed.

ya, im not too sure about old group B cars (your friend has one!? no fair!)
but im almost positive the new WRC cars do not have a BOV (atleast not the subaru) the squeeky noise is the boost going out the other way through the turbo. im sure antilag is in there somewhere, but i think any of us can get that sound by closing your BOV/BPV and turning up the boost. (its bad for an unbuilt turbo though)
if we did it it wouldnt be so dramatic and hyper squeeking because their antilag allows them to periodically tap the throttle in a slide and have full boost...
