Broken belt caused no spark!

At low engine rpm (approaching a traffic light) the engine quit on my 91 legacy 2.2 so hopefully no bent valves. How do I prep the engine prior to timing belt installation? Also how do I adjust the slack after the installation of the belt? Any help appreciated on getting my Subaru roadworthy! thanks all, Hi Skid

There's nothing bent or anything in the engine. Just line up the marks on the belt and gears and you should be set.

Thanks for helping me with my timing belt replacement Manarius, where can I find the marks on the gears that I need to align prior to the belt installation? Also do I need to be at top dead center or is there a different spec for this car? I appreciate the help I get on this site, feel like I am getting closer to getting my Sub running!

Don't worry about TDC, don't worry about prepping anything. Just search Josh's (Legacy777) or Dave's (DLC) posts for links to pictures on timing belt replacement, or you can pick up a Haynes manual if you want, just so you get the idea of how to line up the marks. Line up the marks, put the timing belt on, and you are good to go. Plain and simple.

Get a Hayne's, it is cheap insurance. Or dump a copy of the FSM that Josh has hosted. One major step that manaruis forgot is compressing (and testing) the belt tensioner, and the whole process that goes around that. And there is a specific order to installing the pullies. It really helps a first timer to have pictures and print instructions...

Thanks for the help Matt,are you putting a Subaru engine in a 914 Porsche? Found that info that you mentioned and made copies for reference,also have a Haynes now.Hopefully I have the equipment to compress and check the tensioner. Thanks for the help Matt,I appreciate the help! Finally getting near the end of the workday for me,now I will get to the real fun wrenching for my own benefit! Matt, It would be interesting to know how well a Sub engine transformation into a 914 went!(if thats what you are doing). I have access to those 914 Porsches out here in Phoenix, they are always rust free! bye all

Ahhh..yes...my bad. That's the hardest part to the replacement though.
