It astounds me.

You all seem to have so many problems with your cars. Things that I'd never think would ever go wrong with a car seem to break on so many or your vehicles. I have never once had a car that had any kind of parts replacement needs, besides expected wear items(brake pads, rotors, cv joints, spark plugs, wires, struts, tires, etc) Well, the transmission in the 91 went out, but once again, it was a "wear item" and expected to go out. The only "thing" that I have with my car right now is the intercooler seems to be dripping coolant on my turbo via a pcv line on occasion and I can't figure out what the source is. I drive my cars hard too. Not horribly hard, but I go full throttle probably 7-8 times a day accelerationg, and I brake hard and take corners hard and don't let the engine cool down properly after a good romping, I really am asking for it. I'll also say that none of my vehicles have ever been what anyone would consider a "low mileage" car.

I don't know if I just rock at picking cars, or have good luck with subarus or what, but I don't understand why your cars break so much!

What breaks on our cars that doesn't break on yours?

I can't think of much on my car that failed and I wasn't aware of. I never thought "how did that happen" except when I bought the car a bolt on the right-rear endlink broke and had to be replaced.

Some of our cars break so much because they are making several times the stock output. Look at Doug! He's had more engines than anyone I have EVER heard of (even more than Matt Monson!).

Just craziness yo.

how many miles on the TW laurel?
Ive just been having problems that any 150k mile car would. relays going bad, rust(salt belt originally), errors by my own hand, etc.

I had almost no problems with mine until after 210k. I beat and neglect mine. Talk nicely to your car; like plants it makes a difference.

Only things on my car that broke were wheel bearing and front half-shaft. Otherwise, it always works. I've never had it let me sit.

I think the phrase 'If it ain't broke, fix it until it is' applies to me very well.

Most of the stuff I've fixed was from things that I've done to it (like my wheel bearings going bad coz I pounded the wheelstuds out). My only goal for Patti now is to fix everything that's wrong with it, either that I fucked up or that is from just wear and tear, and then to just drive it. Period.

I've (and by I, i mean me and my dad, who owned it new) only had 1 major repair on the car, ever, sitting pretty at 174,000 miles.

1. Viscous Coupler broke, FWD for a while, got it fixed at 116k

It all depends on how the car was driven before, type of miles, where the car has resided, ie north east (salt & cold) vs like the south west (dry), etc.

I've done a lot more replacement of parts that were questionable because I don't want to take the chance of it failing.

Mine's about as bad as it gets - 10k+ oil changes, NE winters its whole life, high speeds, hard cornering, pounding dirt roads, stupid stunts, jumping islands, etc.

Apart from my rough idle and shitty mileage, the car seems to be in fine shape. Everything that Im currently looking at replacing are either wear items, or upgrades.

I think base milage has some to do with it.

My wifes sedan, a 1990, has a little over 200k on it. Until I purchased it, it was a single family sedan, with supposedly good maitenance.

When I purchased it off ebay for $430, off the bat it needed.....

new clutch
new rings and rebuilt heads
new brakes.

Then this weekend I replaced

Powersteering pump
axle
and if I had it, steering rack due to bad boot.

Other parts that are broken are door handles, speakers and locks. All milage and age related.

And then of course there are examples such as the Reddevil.

As BAC5.2 pointed out, I have been through a few motors. Some due to stupidity, some due to bad luck, some a combination.

But alot of damage I suffered was because I pretty much pushed alot of OLDER parts beyond what they were meant to do when NEW!

The 2nd gear in the tranny went at 230,000 miles, but only cause 180 torque ate it at a bad shift.

Same goes for rotors, powersteering pumps, radiators and axles. All old parts failed when pushed beyond their limits in bad situations.

So other than a few times when parts shouldnt have broken, I really have no complaints when the did. Live and build again!

172k miles

Perhaps it's just me, but even after modding the TW, I've run into no problems. Given, I'm not pushing much boost yet... I guess we'll see then.

The only problems I've had that weren't my fault were a bad MAF, a leaky axle boot and a torn steering boot.
Good old NA gets there slowly yet surely.

My worst was a rod let loose when a friend was driving. Other than that, nothing unexpected has gone wrong.

Stuff that breaks simply provides an excuse to upgrade!!

Worn brake pads = WRX front brakes
Bad struts = KYB GR-2s
Clunking ball joint = STI Aluminum control arms
The list goes on... and most things were bought via E-Bay, some used, most cheaper than stock replacement parts (dealer pricing, of course)

That's how I justify all my mods! It was either that, or it was gas mileage.

"A OEM turbo is $1300!!! I can get a 16G for less than 1/2 that!"

Another thing too Laurel, I'll bet there are some very small things that are wrong with your car that you don't notice, but would drive someone like me or Josh nuts... ;)

like what? the random rattles in the upper passenger side corner of the car between 2500 and 4000 rpms? There is no mechanical problem with my car that goes unnoticed. Believe you me

Here's the initial statement...

Myself, i am pretty convinced the model is a heap. It's been owned in Ca by a mechanical engineering prof and myself, maintenance has been immaculate. At 110k I've dealt with or ignored..

Blown struts (partially my fault)
5 independant door lock problems
2 independant power window problems
1 dead wheel bearing
1 dead rear differential
1 clutch
several leaking front end gaskets
frozen IAC
1 broken endlink (WTF)
1 wire that fused itself to the chassis
1 bad synchro
4 cv axles

It wouldn't be surprising to me if i have the hardest driven car on the board, but brakes, bearings, and engine itself haven't had a lick of trouble.
