Some Tranny swap questions

Post by gt2.5turbo »

Im just about ready to start my 5psd swap and have a few last questions:

1. I need to replace the starter with one for a MT but does it need
to be from the same year i got the tranny from? or are they they
the same through all the years?

2. Im putting in a brand new lightened flywheel when i do the
swap but im getting a really good deal on a slightly used clutch
so is it okay to use a used clutch and a new flywheel
or will it mess things up?

Tranny, clutch, and flywheel are coming from a 99rs

round 1 of my 5mt swap I used a used clutch. it worked perfectly, but I had a strong running bone stock ej22e and I was uber cheaping out. I would take a hard look at what power you think you'll want down the road, and choose your clutch accordingly. If that slightly used clutch is an ACT, sure do it.
as for the starter, I believe that all the 5mt starters are the same but you might want to get a second opinion. Do you know of Nice Car, the subaru place over by old town?
when are you coming to get that console! If you want any help, I'm free after finals until the 20th or so and I work for beer.

the used clutch is an exedy stage 1, thats what i thought about the starters too i just want to make sure i have everything before i get started.

Ill give you a call on the console after im done with finals this week ive been really busy with school and work lately. Id take up your offer for help but im going to be doing the swap in Co. Springs because that is where the tranny and car are both sitting right now, thanks though

I'm using the ACT Spec1 lightened flywheel and clutch setup.
However, the flywheel was new, and the clutch and related came out of an impreza that had already been running some good power, but the clutch had plenty of life left. :dunno: its not a big deal, per se. . .you just don't have to break in your clutch. Just be sure your parts all mesh together as far as push/pull type tranny. This doesn't matter on the starter, though.

Good luck, man! Its a fun swap, and I know you're gonna have a fun car afterward. What's your final drive --4.111?

The lightly used clutch and new flywheel should work okay. The clutch may chatter some while the whole thing's being broken in, but after a few hundred miles or so it ought to be fine.

I know at least some Impreza 5MT starters are different from ours, but 206er is correct; they're the same for all first-generation 5-speed Legacies.
