ok, i have 2 running cars. both are going to make 1 good car. none of the major shops are willing to touch the project. ive done most of the research and i know the solution to all but 1 problem that will be faced in the swap and none will still touch it. shop number one said their too inexperienced in this sort of swap and that they didnt want to risk it. this shop is the largest name in inport performance in the city. the second shop which is one of the largest names in quality subaru wouldnt touch it either. i gave each 2 options. swap with top end swap adn stirght across. none would touch it either way. shop number 3 said they could do it but they are a body shop first and performance for fun on the side. bring in the shade tree guys who have a bit of experience in this. well the first person id go to is working for one of the largest subaru vendors second person is working for shop number 2 and third person is working for shop number 1.

for the love of god its a dam subaru. theres not much you can do to mess this up.

did i mention person number 1 had to do the wiring on a swap shop number 1 was doing because they couldnt get it figured out. if all else fails call him again christ.

If you want to bring both cars across the country, my shop will do it no problem. We installed the motor in the Black wrx in this months Import Tuner.

Swaps are easy yo.

I'd do it if I were close and had any friggin' time. Why can't you do it yourself?

why are you wasting your time with shops?

im putting the ss motor with new heads into my imprezza. none (read cobb tuning and modern garage(who have done all of cobbs major work the last 2 years)) of the shops in the area will do it with the exception of one which is a body shop in actuality. and they wont do the heads or wiring.

the three locals that can do it work for both of the major shops and a major vendor. aka no time to help me out

i would do it myself but my tools and area are limited. my weakest point is wiring. if i were to do it myself it wouldnt ever get done.

its just an old school swap. they are more than willing to do a full sti swap but they avoid this like a cat getting near water.

That's interesting....especially since modern garage did dave's swap. Wonder if they've let Cobb's business go to their head.

Did they give reasons for not wanting to do the swap?

modern didnt do daves tranny swap if thats what you mean. if your talking about his new car than i wouldnt know anything about that.

bascily both companies said its too complicated and that since they arent familar with the car and motor of the old legacy that they cant promise to be able to deliver a working final product. they are also afraid of compltations wiht the new top end. best part is, one of their (cobb) techs (former owner of B-Spec usa) did a usdm sti swap into his personal rs and again into a brighton less than three months after teh car came out with full obd2 function. how do you get experience for a swap no one has tried vurses a swap that has been done to death.

im sure if i went to them and said. i have an unlimted budget. build me a car. they would have no problem. but since both of them have to live up to their respective names they wont touch it with a ten foot pole.

oh and fyi. cobb has a new shop completly seprate from modern now. and 2 (1 in the shop and 1 going in trackside) of their own dynos instead of just the one in modern's bay.

Commas, please!
Why is the wiring going to be difficult? If you're going to make ONE good car out of both of these, just strip the f*ck outta both of 'em, and be sure to stay organized.

Let me say it again,

Stay organized!

Label your parts if you have to, and I found that taking good pictures along the way does help. Plus, it builds a great album/lco help database when you're done.

You can do all this wiring on your own, and make it great, just take your time, and look at how the wires want to go.

Are you not swapping all the wiring from your legacy to the impreza?

What top end do you have?

If you want, ship both cars out here. We'll do the swap, I'll drive it back to you, and fly home.

The scene must suck out there if no one is willing to do THIS swap! It's staying OBD1!!!! It's not that hard!

Hmm....I thought Modern did Dave's touring wagon swap. You may want to ask Dave who did his swap and see if they'll do yours.

I can understand their issues, but I think it's stupid....it's not that hard. The OBD1 cars are much easier to work with IMO.

Im not to sure about the OBD1 swaps being easier. Theres two different ECU locations, and three different ignition setups. Three different ISV setups, a bunch a different dash's and clusters. Its just a time consuming process that no ones willing to pay for.

The OBD2 swap is cake, as long as its using stuff before 2005. The entire harnesses swap between the GC, and GD quite well. When we do swaps now, we require having an untouched donor car, since harnesses from Subaru run around $1500. Considering that you can get a complete wrecked WRX for $3K, its really a no brainer.

I understand their situation. Last STI swap we did, we probablly had over 100hrs invested, and could only charge for half that. Very frustrating.

OBD2 into OBD1 is tough. But at least you don't have to have the OBD2 functional.

That'll be my issue. I'll probably use a complete WRX wiring harness, and completely remove the factory wiring. It's easier than building a custom harness. I'll be using all WRX sensors and a WRX ECU, so it'd almost be plug-and-play.

thats the plan. after all my reading i cant tell if the wiring harness for both cars are all incorperated into the brake lights and other electrical items.

i know the dash cluster is going to need to be rewired

thats exactly their main point. they dont want to quote me a price if it may be more. they dont want to touch it if they cant quote it.

top end is my00rs. if i were to ship the cars to the east coast it would put the project way over budget. 1200 dollars to ship 2 cars isnt exactly a drop in the bucket.

What do the brake lights have to do with the ECU? All of that stuff is switches and relays.

You could even assemble your own custom harness with connectors and wire and work backwards like that.

i dont know. i asked about swapping over the entire harness and people said that id have to splice into stuff ect and that just made me worry bout doing the wiring. that and i suck at wiring. i wouldnt even know where to start when making my own harness.

Just find the engine wiring harness diagram and follow it :).

See what goes to what, and find it on your car. Find the similarities on the new wiring harness and splice chassis wires into the spots for the engine harness (in place of where the original car's chassis wire was).

The Engine control wires should remain the same. The chassis wires will plug and play once you tie them in.
