Well,
It seems my Subaru based pojects are going to be pushed back once again. I came across a deal on a car that I just couldn't pass up. I purchased a 1970 911T Targa this week. It's a very clean 2 owner car that is a driver. Has a number of the special order options like leather seats with headrests and chrome bumper bar crossbars. Has a fresh coat of mid 80's 911 dark blue and a freshly rebuilt targa top. It needs a new fuel pump, so I had to trailer it home, but that's not a big deal. The only bummer is that the "T" is only 125hp. I could rebuild it or replace it with another engine, but when there is a 25k mi rebuild in there, it's hard to justify spending $5000 on another motor. Even with my shop discount, it's gonna run that much. Normally, they are $8-12,000 rebuilt...

1970 eh? Is the carborated version, or the CIS w/ smog pump?

what's wrong with the targa?

If you want to race it, the Targa has too much chassis flex, and they are known for rusting through the middle. If I was going to race it, I would have passed. It's just gonna be a driver for a few years. They are appreciating really quickly, and I will just hold onto it a bit and flip it.
But the 914 is going to be the full blown racecar. I've just got to find a good 911 engine for the 914-6 conversion...
1970 911T was the 2nd to last year of carburation on the T's. By then the E and S had already gone to mechanical injection.

you don't need no stinkin' Einsprintz
when I was searching for my 3.0CS BMW, I pointedly avoided injected cars, even though they had a bit more power
the devil himself built early '70's injected cars

It's not just about racing it with the chassis flex. It changes the handling characteristics of the car dramatically, and judging by the horsepower numbers, handling is all the car has going for it

Really the two go part and parcel. The handling is compromised because of the chassis flex. You can build a race targa, but it requies a very substantial roll cage. But I bought the car as a casual canyon carver.
One thing to note is that for the 1970 race season, Porsche only raced 912's and 911T in the WRC. . They felt that the lower power of those two cars was more appropriate for the dirt and snow. They did also run some 914-6's but the midengined cars were just terribly balanced in the snow
It was the same year they built the monster 911 STs, but that was a car for LeMans and other endurance road racing events...

The 914-6 probably has too low a polar moment of inertia to control properly in rally. That's the number one reason why I'd never write one into one of my books as a getaway car.
Is that one of the early Targas with the zip out rear windows or were those all done by then?

Dead on about low polar moment of inertia. But they make amazing auto-x and track cars. Traditionally, at the annual Porsche Parade a 914 get BTOD, even against the modern 911 GT supercars.
My targa has a glass window. They were done by '68. But is is heated and tinted (both special options back then). It's funny what used to be an option. Headrests were an option. heated windows were an option. There is actually a list of like 50 options, and most of them are standard equipment these days...

I'm so jealous.
I don't care how old and behind-in-technology and comparatively slow your new 911 Targa is, it still shows that you are an enthusiast who appreciates automotive history.
*raises hand and admits that he'd get a 912 without hesitation*

And let us not forget who our daddy is...If it weren't for Porsche and his boxer engine, our Subbies would not be what they are today.
And Porsche owned rally racing for quite sometime. And don't forget where Prodrive got their start, tuning the Rothman's rally Porsches...

Werd.
Hey Laurel, name a car built in the 70's, open top or not, that didnt have some chassis flex. Besides, the Targa is reinforced, it actually weighs a couple hundred pounds more than its solid topped brother.
What would worry me, after owning a 914, is the cost of all the rubber. In SoCal it didnt worry me much, but up here in the NW.....Sheesh. That stuff is so increadibly expensive. (and its no fun having water drip right on your head, like chineese water torture) unless your into that sort of thing.
IMO, If you can learn how to drive it, youve got one of the best handeling cars ever produced.

oh no. does this mean your RS-RA is going to be available?
man the Porsche is better than money in the bank for sure, and it has got to be fun.

Kelley, wouldn't you rather have an 911 non targa with less body flex and less weight?
the solid facts are that in general, full coupes outperform their targa counterparts any day of the week

Saw a gorgeous mint black 912 today.
Plenty of fun cars that handle well still have chassis flex. Back then cars didn't have the tires they have today either - the chassis flex was just incorporated into the driving style.
Targas are cheaper than hardtops. No Porsche or Targa? I'm not a big Porsche guy, but I know what I'd choose.

haha, no kidding!
I want a 2.4 911 so bad it hurts.

Congrats Matt...I am a diehard 911 enthusiast...and it sounds like you picked up a pretty sweet ride! (I am envious)
125 hp sounds really low, even for a 2.4...is it a smog special or something?
I too am not a huge Targa fan...but as you pointed out, for a Daily Driver it will work nicely...and remember people...it is still a 911...bodyflex or not...and if you haven't driven one then you wouldn't know how extremely well these cars handle...We have an 83 911SC...probably...next to the 993 Turbo...my favorite series of 911's
I think my College Graduation present to myself will be either an SC or a 930!
Again...congrats and have lots of fun!!!

Not a chance in hell. What it probably means is that the 911 will pay for the BD chassis the RS-RA will eventually reside in. I am getting patient in my old age. If that engine sits for another year before I drop it, that's just fine by me...
555BCturbo,
The "T" was the economy model. It's a 2.2l, not a 2.4. But in the 2.2's the T was 125hp, the E was 155 and the top of the line S was 180. If I end up keeping it long enough to rebuild the engine, it's pretty easy to knock it up to 190-200hp, but the engine is so fresh, I don't know if I will bother. That $5000 would be much better suited to spending on my 914...

That's right...I forgot about the T having the 2.2...my bad
If the motor is in good shape I would say just leave it, like you have already said...If its and original, clean car, why not leave it that way eh?!
Lucky find though!! Have fun

Well,
It's not that the T got the 2.2l, it's that the 70 and 71's were all 2.2l And 72 an 73's were all the 2.4l. We actually have a '72 2.4l E longblock here in the shop that I have been eyeing for my 914-6 conversion...
