Clutch retainer spring question -- with diagrams!

I just did my first scooby clutch install (thanks for the help Rally_Wgn) and now there is a clicking noise when I press the clutch pedal. I noticed this when I had the transmission on the bench, but thought nothing of it. I have just put the transmission in the car (but not yet hooked anything else up) so it won't be too big a deal to pull it back to get to the clutch release lever.

So here's the deal. There is a clutch release lever retainer spring that clips onto the back of the clutch release lever and I think I may have installed it wrong (such a simple spring!). Any way in this diagram you can see the 2 parts circled in red. The short green line is a small slot on the bottom of the release lever and this is where I inserted the head of the retainer spring (also shown in green), when maybe I should have just let the spring rest on the back of the release lever.

In the next detail it looks like the spring is in the green slot, but I am not 100% sure.

What is the proper location for this spring? In the small green slot noted in the first diagram or simply resting on the back of the release lever (this way seemed to have a lot of slop)

Thanks for your help!

Oh, I forgot, the car is a 96 OBS.
