It has been done....do a search.
You will need the unit and the harness that plugs into the unit itself. You will also need the wiring diagram of your present cars stereo system and the wiring diagram of the WRX's stereo system.
If nobody chimes in on this you can get the diagrams from
www.the12volt.com
I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes, I was actually considering doing that myself.

The simplest way?
Probably to get one of each of these (you can find these -- or equivalents -- for much less than list price):
http://www.scosche.com/scosche_caraudio ... mID=SU03RB
http://www.scosche.com/scosche_caraudio ... emID=SU02B
And wire 'em together. Then it's all plug-and-play. The only catch is that I don't think these harnesses include both illumination wires so you might have to do something funny to preserve dimmer functionality. Like maybe you could remove the ground contact on each side and use it for the other side of the illumination circuit. The stereo should ground through the antenna connector anyway, or you could add another ground.
You'll probably also want to find some kind of 1/2-DIN pocket to fill the gap left in the center console.

If you do like vrg3 says you would be better off grounding your new head unit to the chassis via real ground and not using the antenna as a ground. Yes it can be done but it is a poor ground and could cause unwanted noise in your stereo system.

I've been considering getting a new cd player and thought this might not be a bad idea. I found this connector which has the other dimmer wire:
http://www.geocities.com/svxdc/WRXharness.htm
I suppose if the legacy harness doesn't have it, it wouldn't matter, though. Best buy wired my sony deck, and the dimmer doesn't work anyway. At least I can fold it down at night if it bothers me.
Found it for $5 here.

Well, having the dimmer wire on one side will make it easier...
Cuz then you can take the Legacy harness and move the black wire to where the orange/white wire is supposed to be, and then just put a ring terminal on the WRX harness' black wire and attach it to the radio body directly.

ahh... forget how I wired mine, but the issue with that dimmer wire is probably why the Outback CD player in my Leg is dimmed all the time. I just might have to fix that one of these days.

Vikash- Wouldn't it be advisable to just wire the dimmer to a switched 12V+ such as IGN so the lights are on when the radio is on?
I wouldn't recccomend wiring it to constant 12V+ becasue we don't know how the circuit is and it could leave the radio on or cause a small power drain.
It's gotta be better then a dimmly lit radio.

Why would that be advisable?
I advise doing what I described above, Junior. It'll be easy and it'll work right.

Sorry about that..I didn't get what you were saying. I just read it again. I skimmed the first time...
Junior? How old do you think I am?

That sentence was addressed to Junior, not to you.

sorry to bring this up again, but I have searched and the links in this thread don't work anymore.
I am trying to install an STi headunit in my 91 BJ....I realized last night after looking at it that I need a converted plug and play or something. Any new suggestions on this install?

you can get a "correct" reverse harness for the newer style subaru radio plug. cut off yours and match the wires.
if you do not want to cut, get a forward stereo harness for your leg and match it to the wrx reverse harness.
you will have to add a pin to the legacy forward harness to get everything to work. as with stock stereos there is an illumination wire and a dimmer wire

Are these details posted somewhere?

i doubt it. when you get a cd harness kit for a legacy it's missing the dimmer wire pin. since all you need is the illumination for an aftermarket cd player. but if your adding a wrx/sti unit, add the dimmer pin and viola.
