i was curious about the different tranny options for a 94 ss, i am about to put in a 96 jdm ej20 with a lw flywheel and stage 2 clutch, and i am very interested in swapping in the sti 6 speed, the guy i bought my motor off of has one for sale at a very hard to resist price, has anyone done this and is it worth it? i drove an audi tt with a 6 speed and it was awesome, i tooka picture of the gauges when i was going 105 in 4th gear.

Anything can be done with enough work. My initial guess is that you will have to do some modifications to make it all go but if you're doing a JDM ej20 swap anyways you'll have it all torn apart so it probably won't be too much additional effort. However, I'm not an expert on this and this is my 'feeling'.

But, I have had some time behind the wheel of an 05 STi and while the 6sp works great and does feel good shifting. But I don't like it as much. It lets you stay in your power band really well but it also requires a lot of shifting if you're just cruising around and don't want to be running your engine hard. I personally like a 5sp more, unless the 6th gear was a 140+ cruising gear.

You'll also get told if you haven't already that the 6sp is heavy.

But keep us posted.

The 6 speed weighs 80 pounds more than a 5-speed. That doesn't include other necessities such as the driveshaft, rear diff, and axles.

Do I like the 6-speed? Not really. It makes you feel faster, because you have to shift a lot. But that shifting makes you slower. For 1/4 mile racing, the 6-speed sucks. You have to shift into 3rd gear before you hit 60mph. For Auto-X, I could see it being OK, but you still have to shift a lot.

6500RPM in 5th gear is around 125mph in an STi. The same RPM in 4th gear in a 5-speed (with gears) is about 135mph, give or take a few.

Sucks when you would have to shift into 6th gear to keep up with a 5-speed car in 4th.

What is the irresistable price? Does that include ALL of the necessary bits, or would you just ghetto fab everything up?

For the cost of a 6-speed swap, you could build a bullet proof 5-speed. It'd be lighter, and better for 90% of driving.

The ONLY reason I like the 6-speed, is because you can rest your hand on the shifter when you are on the highway, cruising.

I hope you realize how many sensors and wires there are all over the car that are tied in to the DCCD?

Get it!

Get all the half shafts, get the R180, I think an Impreza driveshaft will work the the leggy? (theres three different sizes, ones godda work?)

You can get the rear halfshafts cut to fit the Legacy spindles. ( I pay $80.00 to have it done.)

Theres an aftermarket computer to control the center diff. http://www.neetronics.com/neet/

You will never break this tranny, and it is fun to drive. I honestlly think its worth the money.

That's a pretty damn neat controller.

If I read that correctly, that controller actually allows you to range from 0/100 (f/r) to 100/0 (f/r)?

That might be pretty interesting.....

I doubt the clutches would hold up well to either setting though.
