ok i thought it was a problem with my engine, now im certain its my turbo taking a crap.

when i first got the car, part throttle it would make a wining sound like a supercharger, but at WOT you just herd the turbo wistling. now it has the supercharger while no matter what throttle im at while boosting.

im going to try to take off my downpipe this week to make sure it is the turbo, because otehrwise its going into the shop on tuesday to have everything checked out.

people that have had their turbo fail, what where the symptoms you had before it finally went?

Thanks,
Shean

Usually when turbos go, they either quit spooling, or start spewing oil. I seen em get out of balance so bad that the shaft bent, and the turbine fins were rubbing the housing making some pretty funky noises.

Almost sounds to me like a leak in the up pipe. Make sure when you pull everything apart, to inspect the gaskets and make sure no exhaust was leaking past them.

I've seen quite a lot of broken up-pipe lately, on legacys and wrx. Mostly in cold weather regions, they crack just beside the weld.

ok but a leaking gasket or cracked up pipe wouldn't let the turbo spool at all, the intake is getting 10psi when at WOT, but you can tell its ether not getting 10psi or ive got a miss or something to that extent

Hey Scooby,

what are you doing wednesday night? I can get you on the lift at 5 if it works for you. If it does I drink heineken ;-)

i got a few extra vf-11's and still have not messed with that up pipe... so either way s'all good. Maybe we should try an 02 sensor while we are under there.

mine makes a turbo whistle too. last time i had it the problem WAS a small pre-turbo exhaust leak. i still boosted but not as much as i could have.

How quickly does it spool? Does it perform as before, or worse?

thanks penguin, my car is in the shop right now, just dropped it off at superior automotive. if i get her back today sounds good to me, your just have to buy the heni because im only 19.

its spools normally, holds 9psi, which is where ive got it set at with the MBC. it never drops in PSI even when there is a drop in power.

lenny has the pad tonight, we are gutting a leg sedan and getting fugged up. And my wife has jury duty on wednesday so that is why it worked for me.

penguin, sounds great... ya steve has had it since 8:30am today, and im still waiting to hear back from him.

Junior, no its not transmission, i know a transmission wine and this isn't it, also it has a rebuild transmission in it, and this sound goes away at WOT, and only happends when its trying to spool the turbo at partial throttle.

penguin, just herd from steve, he is saying its a bad boost leak, sounds like its comming from the drivers side of the engine bay. so if you could help me find it tomarrow ill have the heni's with me.

could it be a bad MAP sensor? not sensiong the correct MAP pressure and causing the ECM fuel cut?

or the EVAP canister being full of fumes and that venting to the engine under boost causing an overrich condition?

What boost were you getting with the stock boost solenoid hooked up?

I get right at/around 9 psig of boost with the stock solenoid, and it doesn't taper off.

finally, i pulled off my down pipe today to check out the turbo, has no shaft play at all. so then i decided to try plug wires and a coolant temp sensor, didn't have the sensor so i just got the wires.

seems to have fixed the problem. i switched back to my stock electronic boost controller and no problems, no miss, just go.

just want to thank everyone for all their help and ideas.
