Long punch to remove the spring pins that hold the joint onto the shifter rod. Pull the old one off, and put the new one on. It's pretty straight forward.

You actually need 2 punches, as the joint is double roll-pinned on (like the shift forks in the tranny).
You CAN do it with just one larger punch, but it's a pain in the dick.

I wish people would post pics with questions so the rest of use could get a clue.

Yes. I'm sure the FSM says to use a new set of roll pins (like they do for the axles), but I've never used a new set, and I've never had a problem.
Remember, it's a roll pin with another roll pin inside of it! If you only have one, you lost the other one. Find it or go to the dealer and get another set of them.

I don't think I have pics of the two different sized spring pins, but yeah it's easier with two different punches.

I have the different size punches, but I only use the smaller one, twice.
Once up the center pin, then up one side of the outer pin, if that makes since.
Its always a pain to have to walk the 10 feet back to my tool box.
Actually, Im quite happy with my Harbor Freight set of punches. Prolly cost a brothah 10 bones, have yet to break one, and have many different sizes and makes. Around 15 different punches.

+1 for getting a set of punches to do this.

Harbor Freight is a chain? We have one in Orlando and hell yeah cheap Chinese tools everywhere!
What's the reason for this mod? Once I replaced my shifter bushings (' tattered remains) it felt fine.

If you want to upgrade to a WRX or late model shifter or short shifter, you have to upgrade to the newer style joint.
punches...

so i got one of these...
wow... well its a subaru axle pin removal tool (wow cuz i cant find it on ebay.. another one i mean...) and its long ...like a foot long....
but i dont know if it'll be worth it...
its still in the bag.. and the axles are off.. but i havent changed to the custom shifter joint yet (doing the STi short throw shifter mod Legacy777 did) so maybe thats when i'll bust it out....
who knows.. interesting..

You can do another trick. You can use a regular punch to pop the smaller, inner pin... then you can stick a 5 or 6mm over the same punch. That will be big enough to go right around the edge of the bigger, outer pin so you can pop it out.
