Another ignoranat newbie trans question

Coming from a mechanical background and years of working on old american iron I think I already know the answer, but...
The '90 Legacy 4wd wagon I got shifts nice and firm from 1-2, slides thru 2-3, and firm again 3-4. I have gotten used to letting off the throttle for the 2-3 shift, but if I'm beating on it a little (that never happens...) i stay on it and let it shift itself. Color looks good, fluid level is where it should be, no funny burnt smell, just the sloppy 2-3 shift.
Qeastion is: Rebuild coming soon, or would a fluid and filter change save it for a while?
Milage is 179k showing, looks to be an abused toy from the overall condition, but runs good and drives well (now that the suspension is pointing where it's supposed to). Might keep it if the trans will hang in there.
