STi Struts with 93 SS Springs

Disclamer: Yes, I've searched, read all the stickies, etc. .. 
I want to use STi struts on my 93SS, but to stay within SCCA Auto-x class restrictions (if I decide to ever auto-x this car), I can't change out the springs. Is it true that if I use my 93SS OEM springs I can use the 2002-2004 STi struts with no other modifications?
I found a post by another member who said he used 2002+ WRX struts on his 93SS without any problems, but I'm under the impression that the STi struts differ in design.
