I have a 97 outback with a 2.5l engine it keeps overheating I was told there is a head gasket problem with these motors. My question is should I just replacw the gaskets or look for another motor. Thanks Dave

Search first, then ask questions.

You have the phase 1 EJ25 that is prone to head gasket failure. You are looking at $1,00 to $1,500 to repair the problem. Good news is once you get that repaired you shouldn't have any more problems for many more miles.

Or it can be 60 dollars if you do it yourself.

I think it might be a bit more than that, due to machine work.

Why would he need machine work unless it was warped?

Hopefully he didn't drive it too long after he noticed it overheating.

60 is a little hopefull.
I am experienced with the phase I. Better do timing belt and valve cover gaskets and gromets. If you plan on keeping it do cam seals. You can go aftermarket on everything but the grommets IMHO.
Still I think you could do it for around $200.
As for warpage, straight edge. You should be fine.

If he just wants to replace the headgaskets like he said and his heads aren't warped, its about 30 bucks for each head gasket. I just bought two for my wrx heads.
