3.90 to 4.11 diff change questions

Hello all,
I'm sure this has probably been beaten to death before but, in an automatic tranny with the original 3.90 rear end can i just simply exchange the pumkins to a 4.11 setup or must i take out the ring and pinion gears and exchange them in order to get it to fit?...... next question is will I bind the transmission by increacing the rear end like i want to do, it was brought up to me that the front and rear gear ratios must be the same in order to not cause binding. is this true? I appreciate any input that is avaliable, I am very new to the AWD scene last 3 cars I have owned were all RWD so im next to lost on this issue......
