What is better, VF8 or TD04?
I have a VF8 at the moment and seems to go pretty well and hits boost very early around 3000-3500rpm.
But my Legacy RS is a rally car and I'm about to put on a 36mm restrictor.
I can ether make/buy a restrictor for the VF8 or I can get a TD04 for free with a restrictor on it.
What would be better?

thanks for your help

VF8 hands down
The TD04-13g is a far inferior turbo
I am running the VF8 on my 2.2 and I love it to death...

VF8 flows quite a bit more air than a td04-13t

What did the VF-8 come on?

Nick and Dan, are you guys certain that the VF8 is better suited for a rally car with a 36mm restrictor? I'm not. The TD04 will spool up a lot lot faster, especially on a restricted 2-liter, won't it?

You know, I think the smaller turbo might be better too. In reality though, this is one of those calls that has to be made from experience.
I say make the restrictor for the VF8 and get the TD04 (especialy if it's free) and see which one's better.

VF8 was on the RS when I got it. Guess its standard?
So the TD04 will fit no problem? Its on a WRX at the moment, but this guy is swapping to a VF23 or something. He is part of a team and they all run identical parts to reduce the amount of spares they have to carry.
The VF8 already runs out of puff at high revs, I think a smaller turbo with a restrictor would be a bad move.
What would be a ideal turbo for my car with a rally restrictor?
Cheers

It depends what year the WRX is. Early WRXes used the same turbo configuration as your car, but at some point (97 maybe?) they switched to a setup where the air tubing went under the intake manifold and went straight into the compressor.
If it's one of these later models, you'll have to adapt the inlet with an elbow of some type. I believe your intake manifold provides enough clearance so you can just use a rubber elbow and a short piece of pipe.

I was just saying that the vf8 would flow more air. I don't know how a restrictor would effect it other than the obvious cutting back on airflow. Alot of it depends on the track you are running and if the restrictor plate is going to keep the tdo4 in an efficient range.

I'm with vrg3 on this. I love the vf8, and I was getting 15 psi by 2800 rpms, BUT, and a big but, in a ralley car, I'd think you would want spool up fast. My vf11 was getting full boost almost immediately. I can tell the difference in lag.
A TD04 will spool up very similar to the vf11. Talking to Kelley, he was able to tune a TD04 to 300 hp. This is of course with different injectors and some EMS. I don't know all the details, but I do know it was for ralley cars.

Thanks fo ryour help!
Just to let you know. I have order a completely new fuel system pumps, reg, rails, injectors and fitting my PossumLink when they arrive. CAN'T WAIT! More HP! hoping for 300+ with launch control and anti-lag.
