rebuilt center differential 93 Turbo automatic, Pics, how to

I had the infamous torque binding of the rear wheels, so it was time to tear into it.

total cost for replacement parts: approx 75 dollars.
includes:
seal transfer piston 33283AA000
seal lathe ring 31363AA010
seal 31363AA030
gasket for transfer case 31337AA120

This is a job that requires some good knowledge of transmissions and would not recommend for the weekend shade tree mechanic.

The parts price aren't bad at all, but the labor is going to kill anyone on doing this job. Thanks to my dad (former 41 years GM mechanic)

I just recieved the same friction plates from MAKO. Did you need any special tools to remove the clutch assembly? I think I'm beyond a shade tree mechanic but I don't have any experience with transmissions. Got any tips?

Remember, this is for the auto tranny, the manual is different.

First remove drain plug for tranny pan, drain fluid.
Second unhook O2 sensor, remove downpipe.
Third, remove driveshaft, by taking out four driveshaft bolts, and then undo the driveshaft front mount
remove rear tranny mount/brackets completely from tranny housing.
Remove speed snsor at rear of housing, its on the right side of car. Tie up wiring to the front so it won't be hanging in way.

Didn't really use much for special tools, some snap ring pliers, a homemade device to hold the gear in place while assembly, etc.
When you go to separate the housing from the tranny, there is a electrical connector that needs undone, for the the solenoid, and there is the speed sensor on the outside that needs be removed.


Inside of the assembly, there will be a couple things to be careful with. There is a spring for the shift lever rod, make VERY sure you have it in place, when the thing gets reassemled.
And theres is a special bigger washer that has a right and a wrong way.

Check the solenoid, test it be applying voltage, it should click if it is okay.

Replace the gasket with a new one, there is a hi pressure line that if the gasket leaks any at all, it will ruin your tranny in no time, that is why need new gasket. don't risk reusing the old one.
When putting back together, make sure that spring doesn't get turned, make sure it is in place, and don't forget the washer.

assemble everything on tranny housing, put back in the drain plug, put on driveshaft, then tranny mounts, then downpipe last. Then fill transmission fluid again.
