Take my Survey!! Please

Ok...so for my final paper in my Criminal Justice Research Methods class I have to conduct a survey...and I figured that Legacy Central was a good place to do it, as we have a widely diverse demographic of people on here. So...this survey consists of questions pertaining to your perception of Law Enforcement (in America, sorry Canadian folks, you can still take the survey if you like :D)

You will be kept anonymous, but if you could please list your age and state (city isn't necessary). You may either repost the results or PM me...I don't want this thread to become a pissing match between people or a discussion of your speeding tickets...

Thanks for your time!

1. How frequently have you had contact with the police in the past?

c. 5 or more

2. What was the nature of the contact? (Mark all that apply)

a. Traffic violation
b. Misdemeanor violation
d. As victim

3. Do you feel that your race had any factor, positively or negatively, in the outcome of your police contact?

b. no

If yes, please elaborate.

4. Do you feel that your gender had a factor had any factor, positively or negatively, in the outcome of your police contact?

a. yes

If yes, please elaborate:

two nights before one particular incident, a female aquantance of mine was pulled over at 3am going the wrong way down a one way street with no driver's license. she was 16 years old. there were 3 other girls in the car with her. there were no calls placed to her parents, and she was told to "drive home and be careful" no tickets were issued. she was pulled over by the same police officer that pulled me over two nights later, and gave me a ticket for a minor traffic violation.

5. Has a sworn peace officer ever acted towards you in an unprofessional/illegal manner?

a. yes

If yes, please elaborate:

he stole my mag-light out of my car while performing an illegal search. also felt the need to interrogate me at length because I was being driven home drunk at 2am, by a sober driver, and then proceeded to tell me what a bad job my parents are doing.

the reason we got pulled over is for the license plate light being out. while we were out of the car with our hands on the trunk being searched for no reason, without being asked, with a gun pointed at us, I noticed that the license plate light was on, and mentioned this to the police officer, who told me "no it is not."

6. How would you rate the quality of policing in your community?

d. Poor

I have many more examples if you would like me to continue my elaboration

c. 5 or more

2. What was the nature of the contact? (Mark all that apply)

a. Traffic violation
d. As victim
e. Other/Not Applicable (I will not elaborate)

3. Do you feel that your race had any factor, positively or negatively, in the outcome of your police contact?

a. yes

If yes, please elaborate.
Unfortunately, I have to say here that I'm glad I'm caucasian because I might not be a free man right now. (race had a positive impact on my outcome)

4. Do you feel that your gender had a factor had any factor, positively or negatively, in the outcome of your police contact?

a. yes

If yes, please elaborate
Male officers will invariably give male drivers tickets for the exact same violations and conditions that an attractive female driver would receive a warning for. I have compared notes with many friends on this.

5. Has a sworn peace officer ever acted towards you in an unprofessional/illegal manner?

a. yes

If yes, please elaborate.
I cannot elaborate as the charges were dropped, other than there were many gross abuses of power (both physical and legal) witnessed and experienced over the course of an entire year.

6. How would you rate the quality of policing in your community?

d. Poor

Certain drugs are prescription in the US and not in Canada. According to Fed rules, you are allowed only a certain amount for personal use. Any more than that- or you fail to tell us, and it is technically drug smuggling.

6. How would you rate the quality of policing in your community?

I nearly always get tickets in spite of testicle-cramping politeness while attractive women I know (one even tried to get a ticket by acting like a complete bitch, apparently sick of the special treatment her natural G breasts get her) walk with verbal warnings and for far more dangerous offences (I'm always speeding and get caught on the highway 10-15 over while they blow stop signs, red lights, really unsafe vehicles, etc.).

5. A

Town cops only (not states troopers who have always been professional). Yelling, insulting, condescending behavior, accusing, lying about what either of us was doing. In one instance a cop tried to run a stop sign on a quiet street and I happened to be coming up, forcing her to slam the brakes on. She proceeded to pull me over in my ex's driveway for speeding (which I wasn't doing for once).

The LAPD is really cool to white college kids in the ghetto. I got pulled over for speeding and driving like a jerk one night and they just joked around with me.

5. a (City/town police officers are in general less proffesional than State Troopers with regard to taking advantage of their authority. A simple example of this is when getting pulled over for speeding they ask you if you know why they pulled you over trying to get you to give up your rights and admit guilt. A state troop will tell you why they pulled you over).

A little op-ed here.
I happen to work with 2 retired officers. One of which, my boss, was my dad's longtime best friend. These guys aren't the stereotypical cops you always hear about. Level headed and observant, these guys kept our streets safe for over 25 years. Good spirited and a little jokingly, they didn't let stress affect their jobs or personal life. My boss knew his life was on the line, especially being a motorcycle cop, evermore so during the famous Milwaukee riots, but never took it out on those he was charged with protecting. Fatal accidents, shootings, domestic disturbances, petty crimes, been shot at, been run over, you name it, these guys seen it all, lived to tell about, and never had to shoot anyone. Many cops are decent people just trying to do a job we need them to do. It's the a-holes that taint the impressions of them all as a whole. It would be nice to have less cops that let their jobs get to their heads. We could definitely do without them. But the fishing, hunting, football watching, beer drinking, family raising, god fearing, responsible, respectful ones never get thanks for just doing their job. But then again, that's not why they do it.
