My very expensive week(s) ( now with part IV)

Since I am in the process of moving, and my garage space is limited and it's so freaking cold, I was not going to do my own clutch.
So I took it to my trusted mechanic and said have at it.
( ACT street flywheel and centerforce clutch)
Ok, so other than him getting in the bearing backwards, and having to take it all apart to reverse- it went well.
So I thought- hell, why not clean out the garage and have him put in the LSD I have sitting around. ( as they have the car up, driveshaft out, etc etc).
I did not have the stubs for the axle and I thought nothing big of it.
Well, I WAS WRONG.
Since the 3.90 is only from 1991- part of 1992 Legacy Turbos, the dealer needed a VIN to pull the correct part. At this point I am starting to get a bit nervous. So they pull the part numbers and I about wet myself at the price. $300 for new stubs. ( I was like WTF!!!!) Seems that for the 3.90 LSD the stubs are specific - and they could not find another part ( say one from a newer 4.11) to use instead. ( and since I need the car and I don't have 4.11 stubs to try and make sure, I get to cough up the dough.
If you buy a rare car, you get to pay for it in the end.
And I was hoping this would be a cheap upgrade.

What are the "stubs" for the axle? I'm curious because I have a 3.9 VLSD that I plan to install soon.

The stub shafts in the diff.
The stub shafts are different between open and lsd. Open are "universal" for left and right. The LSD stub's are labeled left and right. They are not interchangeable with open stubs.
Matt - IIRC, your diff has the stub axles.
I bet the stubs are similar between the 4.11:1 and the 3.90 LSD.

So do you need different axles with the 3.9 LSD or just have to make sure it comes with these stubs?

Just make sure you get the stubs. The axles should work ok.

You mean the male splines on the diff that you hook the axles to? The ones with the axle pin holes? If so then yes, I already have those on mine.

Thanks Derek,
but when the car is in the air, and things have to go, options are limited.

Matt - Yes, those are exactly the part that is not interchangeable with the non-LSD stubs.

Ok, so on Friday, I was starting to wonder WTF is up with my overnight shipping being 3 days late. So we give Subaru a call................................................................................................................................................... Yes, the parts are available......................................................................................................................Yes, they ordered them, ,,.............................................................................................................................BUT they forgot to say which CONTINENT they were coming from.
Straight from Japan.
( and we triple checked to see if another set of stubs would work)

THE CAR LIVES AGAIN!!!!
OK, after waiting approx 11 days for the parts from Japan, I now have on the car:
3:90 VLSD,
New Centerforce Dual friction Clutch
Streetlight 13lb flywheel
Sadly, I have no Idea how it drives as the GF had to go get it as I am in Kent and the car is in Spokane.
She says it drives great, but I get to wait a week or so to find out.
Total cost: DON"T EVEN ASK!
My Mechanic was awesome to let the car sit for 7 business days in the shop while we waited for parts! ( Ihighly recommend them if you are in Spokane)

imo, perfectly good waste of 300+

I am no sure about where you live, but the weather here gives me times where the Legacy gets shitty loose where our RS did not.
Also, it gives a little bit more on the autocross track.

I'll disagree.
I'm quite excited to put in my LSD. Spinning one rear isn't that fun. It'll break away more progressively and be more neutral while sliding as well as being more responsive to throttle input during a slide.
LSD FTW as the 1337 geeks say.

The one time I got stuck in the snow, I wouldn't have if I had had an LSD in the rear.

I sure as hell wish I had one when I was rallycrossing a week ago!

OK, I finally got to drive the car. I can now recommend the Centerforce clutch with glowing results. Not too harsh, but still good on the smoothness and speed of actuating.
