Hey guys, first post here. Alittle about myself. I own a 1991 Subaru Liberty (legacy where ur from). Its a non turbo and i am from Australia. I have been looking at the board for some time now and think its abosolutley the best Legacy board period. Great job guys.

On to my question. When i had purchased my car about 2 months ago it was a 2WD and AUTOMATIC. Only reason i purchaced this car out of all the other i had seen was cause it had a sunroof Other then that, it really wasnt me... I need a real car

So i converted it to AWD manual with the help of this site:

Converting her took me 3.5 days... would have been longer if it wasnt for that site... all those contemplating the conversion, JUST DO IT! VERY VERY WORTHWHILE!

My question is, I has been threw many fourms and been to that site over and over again and i cant seem to figure out the AT/MT ID!

It seems it might be wired backwards (as the website explains) but it seems as the the donor car doesnt even have that pin grounded... Both ECU's are exactly the same and both are missing pin 20 on connector B48 (on the connector that is... the pin is still on the ECU) I believe that there SHOULD be an ID because the car doesnt seem to run the way it should. It backfires alittle on gearing down and seems to misfire and higher speed between 80 - 120 km/h

Sorry for the long post but i just want to get to the bottom of this and drive the her like she wants to be driven!!!

Apparently the polarity of the transmission ID switch wasn't always the same, as you seem to have found. I think you should try just grounding the transmission ID pin on the ECU.

If you need a spare pin to move into that spot, you can take the wire from the "Trouble Code Output" spot, or the "TI Monitor" spot. You shouldn't ever need those signals.

As Vikash mentioned, just try grounding that pin and see what happens. You should hear/see the idle change.

If it's setup for an AT, the neutral switch wiring will be interpretted backwards, so the idle will increase when in neutral, but drop when in gear.

If it's setup correctly, you shouldn't really see a change too much in the idle.

Be aware too, that the wiring and everything I've done is for the US legacies, specifically the 90 MY. There were some variations in model years, and could be some differences between countries too.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Thanks Josh for an awsome right up and a great page. Josh my car does exactly as u mension with the nuetral switch, increase idle and drop in gear. I had snip the wire which goes to the N globe in the dash so all electrical has been taken care of except the AT/MT id and the crusiecontrol (not important at the moment).

I will ground the pin, but would there be anychance of damage to the ECU if i did? I.E. the AT/MT is on a different pin and pin 20 b48 is something completly different, is it possible to blow it or something? I would have done it sooner if it wasnt for that concern.

Anything is possible, but I'm fairly certain that the pinouts are the sameand that the worst thing that would happen would be that grounding the pin would not improve anything.

Hey guys, grounded the pin it worked like a charm... IT FEELS LIKE A NEW CAR! Runs much better at high and low speeds. Bucking at high speeds has stopped and its just transformed now... Thanks again for ur help guys i really appriciate it.

You may want to reset the ECU now, since it's had some drive cycles of it thinking it was an AT.
